I think the underlining problem is that Saturday night's have become so blooming dull. Strictly is still successful in the same way BGT and IAC is, because it looks and feels like event TV. Other than that why does anyone need to bother tuning in to their TV's these days? Getaway is OK. I enjoyed it enough but can't see myself getting excited enough because it's on! They didn't change or vary the games which is something at least Total Wipeout did. Twelve weeks with the exact same challenges is going to feel more like Groundhog Day than it is Saturday night telly. British TV has I'm afraid, jumped the shark. TV execs no longer know, nor seemingly care, what the viewer wants. It is easier and cheaper to just fill the schedules with the same shows day in, day out ad nauseum until viewers couldn't care less what was on because they'll assume it was the same as yesterday anyway. Sad state of affairs if you ask me.

It is days like today where DS no longer providing ratings is going to cause a problem. I can't believe they're not doing it any more. The website really has gone so far downhill. It is pathetic. If they wonder why their reports weren't getting the hits they used to, it's because in recent months their ratings reports went downhill as well compared to how they used to be. Better those than nothing though! |

Unfortunately Hassaan is currently in a hospital bed so is obviously not going to be posting ratings. Hope he gets well soon!

Yes, even allowing the business cost of acquiring the access, I would have thought the information would be of huge interest to a media site like this -irrespective of any use that we make of them on this thread. |

The Voice isn't doing well (not the BBC's problem after this year) but XF didn't do well either. I don't care about demos, this isn't America, XF used to do well in the younger demo and have a bigger total audience.
No one has the bragging rights. I bet the comparisons slanted against The Voice stop from certain posters when both shows are on ITV. |

Most TV formats are incredibly repetitive - that's the point of a format! It goes just as well for the Saturday nights of yesteryear. Blind Date was literally the same incredibly simple parlour game, played over and over and over, 26 episodes a year, for nearly two decades! Same thing goes for Millionaire, and in fact any old quiz show you care to mention. TV has always thrived on familiarity and 'event TV' isn't an event if it's on everyday. The only difference today is fewer people tune in, because everyone has more choice. It's easy to just blame TV bosses, when I just don't think it's remotely realistic to expect TV to be the talk of the nation every weekend of the year anymore.
The good news for us, is that the quality of the programming we watch is as high as it's ever been. |

I suppose it just shows that given little choice we watched anything. Our TV viewing now mainly consists of timeshifted non-soap scripted, films, live sport and news.

There is this view that everything was fantastic in the four or three channel world and all the family sat down waiting for Seaside Special on Saturday night. In reality these shows only achieved 18 million viewers as the other two stations often capitulated( probably there was German opera on BBC Two) against big hitting shows, there was no other form of visual entertainment then and fewer people had access to cars. Typically these shows, which were just as mauled by the critics and more discerning viewers then as something like BB would be now, featured end of the pier entertainment, an excruciating host like DLT, some middle of the road pop act like The New Seekers and banal games with the audience. No wonder these sort of shows, that were commonplace until the mid eighties, are often overlooked by people.

Agreed everyone looks back on the 3 or 4 channel era as the best TV ever was in truth there was little other choice and you're right the only screen to look at was the TV, no iPads, phones etc, This is whole reason TV shows don't rate as high anymore ad events like the Olympics will ever draw those sort of audiences again.
However, genuinely good shows that people remember fondly from this era like The Two Ronnies and The Benny Hill Show deservedly attracted up to 20 million viewers as in the case of Hill, he only made four shows a year and in the pre video era, a new show was a massive talking point. |

I'm sorry to hear about Hassaan; I hope he's better soon .
![]() -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To be frank, The Voice's arrival has drained the talent pool in the UK. It was completely unnecessary; the country could just about manage one karaoke show on it's talent base, but not two. It's the same in America, The Voice has seen off The X Factor and the longstanding Idol - neither of the former two were needed over there but it's a quick fix to a long term problem. Thank goodness ITV didn't purchase Rising Star, that would have been the final nail in the coffin. I'm not saying The X Factor would have declined if it hadn't been for The Voice (I think it would have done) but I don't think it would have declined to the same extent. |

My best wishes to Hassan too.
I'm not sure DS is really a media site these days; certainly not a serious one. It's an entertainment site, with some legacy media forums. I agree wholeheartedly with you about the main site. It's obviously being run as cheaply as possible as an entertainment site with very little attempt to cover anything more substantial than trivia. People would find it hard to believe now but news would sometimes break on DS in the old days. The forums are a very pale shadow of their former selves and its hard to see why anyone would sign up now. Long gone are the days when forum posts were quoted in BBC news articles or products would be launched with previews in the forums with the manufacturer posting or media companies would check DS. |

Seeing David Attenborough with his giant dinosaur on BBC1, I am reminded that he has recently made programmes for Sky because they were making the programmes in 3D.
The BBC also had a spell making some programmes in 3D (such as the Strictly final) but they abandoned that at the last (or last but one) round of budget cuts. Is Sky still making programmes in 3D, or Is this on-off technology (which I gather has been around for as long as cinema has in one form or another) currently in the "off" position? What was the last big film to be made in 3D? Also Attenborough And The Giant Dinosaur is occupying a slot normally occupied by a programme that currently attracts over 7m viewers. Well AATGD do as well? I would have thought Sir David would appeal to the same audience as Countryfile and yet look how poorly the recent Great Barrier Reef series did on Wednesday nights. |
