Vera's ratings hardly knocked W&P out of the water, though - it may have rated respectably, and the consolidated figures should be solid, but it's not really a resounding victory ... certainly not next to the figures CTM is pulling in.

Broadchurch 3 apparently shoots late spring - so either it'll be used to bolster Sunday nights in place of DA ... or that honour will go to Victoria, with BC3 airing in 2017. Which piles a whole load more pressure on Steve November and his team to deliver with their new commissions ... something they've not had that much success with so far.

AMC is still struggling massively over on BT, to the point that it is now a huge embarrassment.

Hopes were pinned on new to the UK period drama Manhattan boosting the channel's ratings at the start of this month, which received a fair amount of marketing on radio and other platforms.

But after launching with just 7,000 viewers (and that was for the late night repeat as opposed to the main showing), it's now doing less than 500 (not a typo) consolidated for all screenings.

With weekly reach back down to just 69,000 and only three programmes in an entire week topping the 500 viewer mark, surely this is a channel with absolutely no future in its current form. Certainly not as a BT exclusive anyway.

Sky Atlantic by comparison has a weekly reach of 2.57m.

I am always amazed at Countryfiles figures although i see it on in quite a few homes when i go out to work on a Sunday night.

You Know what i have been thinking exactly the same thing, I was hoping that they would put together a whole tribute show together for him telling us his life story and featuring plenty of clips of his work etc, A bit like the tribute shows they did for Jimmy Savile showing the persons work while at the BBC.

I don't think they'd have expected it to come close to CTM though. It probably did better than expected. The last series only launched with 4.7m (inc +1) against Poldark. BBC1 never got as high as 5.5m against Downton (outside of Christmas) and if they had it would have been considered a great result. Vera did very well.

I don't think Broadchurch will be ready for the Autumn. I wouldn't out it there anyway. I think they'll want something with returning potential in that Sunday slot and I'm pretty sure this will be the last Broadchurch (Chibnall taking the Who gig must confirm that). I think it'll be either Victoria or The Halcyon that Sunday slot. Both 8 parts and big period drama, like Downton. Victoria could potentially air this Spring (if Marcella will be ready for April then Victoria could be) or be held until the Autumn. They could play Cold Feet there as well actually, although I think they should play that midweek.

Decent start. Never seen it myself - but it seems to have started well.


Highest rated show of the entire week. That is a crazy rating. Must be it's highest number in years.


Solid start for Vera. It seems to be denting CTM - which seems to be finally losing steam after rating so well originally. Imagine how high Vera could have been with a better lead-in and no drama competition on BBC1.



Hawaii Five-O scores a series high for it's 5th episode of its current run - 1.10m (inc +1). It never ceases to amaze me how well it does, even now on it's sixth season. These types of US imports tend to die over when they've been running this long - but H5-O shows to signs of decline.

Terry's One Show tribute was superb. It was respectful, entertaining and poignant. Job well done.

Very intersting set of ratings here.

Firstly, a stonking figure for Countryfile, without doubt the rating of the night. Perect Sunday night viewing. But we have here the perfect example of what happens when ITV are not present in the schedule, and BBC1 is massively inflated on Sunday. ITV has gifted Countryfile at least 1.5m extra viewers, who would not have otherwise watched.

The 6.30pm-8pm slot is where BBC1 gain massively because that is whre ITV is weakest. And weak thery certainly are. under 2m for 90minutes it dire. Beowulf needs to be pulled NOW!! Whoever decided to keep such flops in the schedule needs a good slap to wake up. ITV news delivering good figures for the 6pm slot, building nicely...until....Planet's Got Talent arrives and the rating collapses.

Fantastic for Vera, I knew it would do well-ish but not that good. Superb figure for what is another police procederal against a BBC stronghold and a piss-poor lead in. Gives ITV the clear indication what the audience are looking for. Fantasy drama out. Away from BBC drama, Vera would surely be pushing 6m in overnights. Its likely to be 7m+ when consolidated figures arrive against other popular dramas.

When ITV compete with BBC1, as CTM shows, they can do well. Last year with Get Yor Act Together and All Star Family Fortunes, CTM was gifted a bigger audience.

The Jump did fairly well, though I expected it to do better with ITv weaker. CBB is doing good for Ch5 also. Should be 3m for the final.

Sounds right. It's an 8 week run so that'd take it up to BGT week. 5 weeks between the end of Benidorm and the start of Marcella. Perfect fit for Scott & Bailey and Dark Angel. Means Grantchester will have to go on a different night.

Yeah, I'd noticed the similarity to Downton's fifth series last week - it's interesting, though probably a coincidence. Certainly the enhanced competition may have had an effect - Vera on ITV alongside two solid 2m+ staples on BBC 2 and C4 is probably the sternest test the show has had since Dancing on Ice in its early years.


Oliver could be a good shout - though I think it could really depend on what kind of cast they can get. A few bigger names - now that the format is a more known quantity - could really help to generate more interest. In any case, I hope ITV go again. It seems like Fox really raised the bar technically last night - and the live audience helped to fix the slightly 'flat' feeling I think these shows have suffered from before.

Extraordinary rating for Countryfile last night. What a massive hit. Call the Midwife is still doing well in the overnights, it's timeshifting well too.

War and Peace has done strong numbers throughout. I wonder if it will be back? I'm not sure if it was only ever meant to be one series. But it has remained stable and hasn't dropped like a stone.

Vera performed brilliantly for ITV. I wonder if they will extend its run to 6 episodes next time, like they've done with Midsomer Murders if it continues to do well.

On a separate note, I expect Happy Valley to open with some very strong numbers when it returns next week. I'm thinking 6.5 - 6.7m.

Yes ITV have actually tried this January unlike last year when their Sat/Sun schedules were pretty threadbare and they have been rewarded to an extent but we all know that big dramas can coexist and the point has been proven again. Going forward though it means that ITV have used up some of their retuning bankers and while they still have a few to come they are going to have to rely on their new dramas working and reaching the same figures so ITV might be potentially be weaker later on in the year especially having to replace DA/Doc Martin which they had last Autumn.

BBC also have potentially a lot of new and returning dramas but aside from a few shows we know about we dont really know what they intend to schedule and where. Going to be interesting and keep the thread guessing though.

I agree that a live audience is an absolute must although how easy that is to achieve I dont know.
Dont know about Oliver either - I mean it contains massive set pieces/dance numbers that would be difficult to do I would think.
