Just to go back to this, that BBC2 schedule was largely improvised because the whole day's play at Wimbledon was abandoned -
http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules...and/1997-06-27. Funnily enough that was also the first year the Beeb covered Glastonbury - it was the year the Other Stage sank into the mud - and look what time the coverage began!
Worth looking at that rating for Countdown as well, but that could do exceptional figures in those days when BBC1 and ITV were showing kids shows, and on that day BBC2 wouldn't have been showing Wimbledon either.

I think the last two years the Glastonbury special has been on BBC2 due to Andy Murray playing at Wimbledon. As I mentioned, it's interesting how they always suggest The One Show Glasto show is there to bring a BBC1 audience to Glasto, and I don't think they've ever shown it on there.
I doubt there's much to read from the ratings for it, it was a rather different One Show to usual so it alienated some of the regular audience, plus of course there is an issue of routine with some of its audience and if it doesn't come straight on after the news they don't watch it. It doesn't normally have another BBC channel getting four million opposite it either.

Well, this is the thing, isn't it, breakfast TV relies on events like this to bring in new audiences of people who usually don't watch the news at breakfast time because they think it's boring. I think it's the case that if it's political most people will go to the Beeb while the ITV audience tends to be boosted for big human interest stories.

Sunday Politics was always billed as running from 10am, earlier in the week I was wondering how the hell they were going to fill it. No problem doing so, as it turned out. And Glasto had the same amount of coverage, it started at 7.30 rather than 8pm.

I don't know what else they could have done, they showed them again at half time and they had a highlights programme. The vast majority of the audience was tuning in for the later match. Sky has often given the first game of a Super Sunday very short shrift if the second one is more interesting. There was a famous example of the day Eric Cantona came back from his ban and Sky spent so long going on about it, they missed the kick-off of the earlier match.
Then in the 2002 World Cup, ITV moved the entire second half of Paraguay vs South Africa to ITV2 to allow more build up to England vs Sweden. And got into trouble from Ofcom for not asking permission.

Of course, because the BBC have the first two picks, it's guaranteed that Wales vs whoever on Friday night will be live on the Beeb - second pick if England are through, first pick if they're not.
