Another strong rating for Vera. In better circumstances it could do 6m+ and I suspect another series is definitely on the cards.

Could some of that be people tuning in to see the weather for the week ahead?

Yes, I think the 15-minute breakdown shows it peaks in the last quarter which is usually the time for the WFTWA. RobbieSykes pointed this out a few weeks back.

Now I'm old enough to remember when I'd wait for this in the mid-80's at 12.50pm. Back then it was billed in the Radio Times as "Weather for Farmers".

Just seen that First Dates is airing on Friday at 9pm this week. That'll be its third timeslot during the 5 week run.

No, an episode last year got 1.45m exc +1 I believe, although it was on a Friday.

Last year besides the launch it consistently hovered around 2m (inc +1) so last night's 1.9m is pretty much in line with that (episode 2 last year got 1.99m inc +1). Whether it holds up as well over the run remains to be seen. How many weeks is it on for?

Thank goodness for the rugby and Vera from ITV's perspective. The less said about the in between bits and the bit after, the better.

Vera getting 710k on +1 is pretty impressive

Catchphrase in an earlier slot got more viewers than both Planet's GT and Beowulf. Even rpt's of Catchphrase would be doing 1m higher than both of these. Why don't they just pull those underperforming programmes? Its just common sense.

Look at the peak for CF. 9.4m. But its so easy to see why its getting such massive figures.

Despicable Me delivers another 1m figure. How many time can people watch it without getting bored of it? Its seemingly endless.

Despicable Me 2 is going to be huge.

That 6.30-8pm block is a car crash. Surely they can't leave Beowulf there for 6 more weeks?! It's not so bad now as it doesn't seem to be damaging Vera much, but it'd be a toxic lead-in for a new show once Vera finishes up in a few weeks.

Sadly it going up slightly will probably just above save it from being pulled.

Me too. Indeed the whole programme was designed as some PSB box ticker for the interests of the farming community. Now it's top of the ratings.

It's a very different beast though to what it was.

BBC1 is clearly ignoring the younger demographic these days, "younger" being under 35.

You would think ITV1 would pounce, but look at the unappetising fare they put out.

Hah - makes it sound as though the Farmers get different weather to the rest of us! But the last 15 mins last night was huge....

Do we know when the Met Office is being replaced as the Beeb's weather provider? That will affect a key segment of Countryfile if the information isn't of as good quality or as well presented.

EastEnders and The Apprentice get a young audience.

ITV are creatring programmes for younger people but then no other demo is interested in it. Take Me Out skews very young but they're the only ones that watch it. The X Factor skews young but used to get the older audience. Making shows that just appeal to the youth demo won't get you a large volume of viewers, it's narrow casting rather than broadcasting.

So I should have said "mostly" ignoring a younger audience.

I think ITVs stuff is low-brow rather than young, there's a very limited audience for that.

You'd hope that the quality is better - otherwise why change it...? But to answer your question I can't remember - think it sometime this year though.

Appealing to only an older audience is narror casting too. And they do that more often than making shows for young people. It'll work for them in the short term but I'm in my 20's and to me and my friends, the BBC and Itv are largely irrelevant. I think both broadcasters are on borrowed time. My generation wouldn't miss them.
