My mobile phone contract is up for renewal soon and I am looking at upgrading to a phone with Wi-Fi calling as my mobile phone reception at home is awful.

Wondered if anybody else used Wi-Fi calling and if they could answer a question for me.

Am I able to connect to any of my contacts using Wi-Fi calling or just those on the same network as me?

Thanks

You can call anyone using WiFi calling. It just changes how your phone connects to the network. It is not like using Skype or whatsapp to make calls - so calls are not free, but the same as if you were somewhere with 2G/3G signal and making calls.

EE's WiFi calling supports SMS texts.
Vodafone's does not.

O2 and Three don't do WiFi calling.

It'll work as if you were connected via cellular. It doesn't matter what number you're calling (or texting - as WiFi calling works for this too).

To clarify - I currently get free minutes (not that I can ever use them) but if I used Wi-Fi calling this would not come out of my free minutes? Maybe I'll stick to Whatsapp to make calls.

It'd be exactly the same, just the calls and texts go over your wifi instead of your local mast. So other than seeing an icon showing you have wifi calling activated, you won't notice a difference.

Calls still come out of your allowance

Brilliant - thank you.

I've been using EE WiFi calling since late November. Brilliant and no problems. You don't need to do anything different apart from switch on the WiFi calling option.

However, it's worth pointing out that in the EE case the phone MUST come from EE themselves, either online or one of their shops. You will not get the benefit of this if you obtain your phone from an online dealer etc., it must come from EE.

Don't know about the Vodafone.

Same with Vodafone. Unless you're using iPhone when it doesn't matter where iPhone came from.

You can flash EE firmware onto selected android phones to get it to work if they've been bought elsewhere, but of course that's a bit more advanced

It isn't real WiFi Calling though. Wifi Calling is integrated in to the operating system, so you just use your phone as normal to call or text. What three offer is like a VoIP service through its own app.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. Still, it might suit the OP despite the difference.

Having texts in different app and problems with ring tones? The 3 people I know on three have uninstalled it as being crap. O2's app is apparently worse!

Hi

I was in an EE store the other day and asking about WiFi Calling. Id told them that Id purchased my iPhone 6S directly from Apple. I was advised that this wasn't an issue and that it would simply be added to the account if I were to move to EE from Three.

Have I been told a load of BS by the EE staff?

Thanks

No, it doesn't matter where you get your iPhone from, it will work with EE WiFi Calling. My iPhone is direct from Apple and works with EE Wifi Calling.

Sure, those caveats of yours might well be valid and my initial point about Wifi calling wasn't completely accurate, but seeing that one can use the app as a means to make a call over Wifi, then I believe that it's another choice that the OP can take that's within the scope of their question. Still, admittedly, I haven't installed the Three inTouch app due to the apparent issues that you raise (although my network connection is fairly robust, so I don't really need to).

As mentioned previously, you can buy your iPhone from anywhere.

Except don't walk out of the Wifi signal range, while on a call, the call will be dropped. Sounds obvious, but loads of people (myself included) walk out of, or away from an office
area or cafe when taking a call !

It'll be nice when full handover works !!

Yes, it needs a 4G Voice (known as VoLTE) capable phone however, so iPhone 5,5s,5c which do WiFi calling WILL NOT be able to do this. iPhone 6, 6s (and plus) will.

Hi

So once EE rollout/activate their 800 MHz spectrum, the iPhone 6S will handover WiFi Calling to VoLTE seamlessly?

Thanks
