I can understand her not knowing who Nigella Lawson is but to have no idea who the US President is, at least I assume that's who she meant, I just don't get it. How can you go through life and not know something like that? Even Jez was speechless.

I think not knowing who Nigella is, is less to do with age and education and more to do with location, class and wealth. Nigella is very upmarket and sophisticated in terms of the food and lifestyle she specialises in. Yes, she does make a fab coca cola ham and cook with Malibu, but that's done with an ironic wink when she's slumming it. She IS dead stylish and dead posh. And extremely rich. As well as extremely clever, she's an exceptionally gifted writer. She's on another planet from Steph.

My friend who isn't thick by a long chalk regularly pronounced epitome as ep- I -tome. Her sister would pronounce Worcestershire as Worcester- shire crisps. I don't think it's a big deal misprouncing Rapeseed as Rapseed in the grand scheme of things.

He wasn't blankly ignorant but strangely confident in thinking that eggs come from chickens' 'wrens' (or something). It sounded like he'd fallen for a prank, or possibly the sort of easy answer that parents might give a four year old.

Was it Ashleigh Hughes who didn't know about eggs coming from chickens? It makes the whole "Which came first...?" cliché a lot less paradoxical.

I don't think the youngsters that go on these shows and enter c-list showbiz are representative of young people in general. They seem to consist more of people who would have a difficult time finding any kind of alternative work and have spent most of their lives hoping for some kind of stardom rather than giving any thought to a decent education.

I have a teenage son and loads of nephews and nieces ranging in age from 17 to late 20s and they have great general knowledge and maturity as well as being fun-loving and daft at times. I think the ones that they put in CBB or nonsense reality shows are definitely 'for entertainment purposes only'. They really couldn't do much else in life.

So there has been no one fame hungry or thick in previous generations?

Not having heard of a celeb cook or cooking oil isn't the end of the World no, but surely it isnk( unreasonable to expect a 22 year old to know the name of the American President and British prime Minister - and if you know their names, you'd know it wasn't the new one you just heard.

Maybe i'm unusual but i remember being told about the first woman Porime Minister when thatcher won the 79 election by both my Parents and School. I clearly remember Ronnie Reagan winning the 1980 election over Jimmy Carter. I was 8 and 9 at those 2 elections. I haven't not known who the Prime Minister or President were (and Leader of the Opposition, Chancellor, Home Secretary etc) ever since and not just from School by parents and seeing the News.

As far as I'm concerned it is just basic General Knowledge that every adult should know and it wasn't necessarily the Schools responsibility to teach.

No doubt there have been fame hungry/thick people in previous generations, but there was no reality TV or internet in previous generations, so people tended to become famous through some talent (e.g. singing, dancing, acting, sports, writing) or through achievement in their chosen field (e.g. science, exploration, art). Basically, you had to have talent and a strong work ethic to become famous. Many people spent years working their way though the pub and club circuit before getting the chance to showcase their talents on TV and become famous (Les Dawson being an obvious example).

Now you're classed as a celeb if you are (or were) married to someone famous, had sex with someone famous, had a boob job on the NHS, appeared in a documentary about benefit claimants, have appeared in a 'scripted fly on the wall' documentary series, claim to be a 'model' (preferably one who appears to have been drawn on with felt-tipped pens) or be related to someone who falls into one of the aforementioned categories!

I think one of the reasons Stephanie is so immature is that she's never had to work as part of an ensemble in a theatre production. Nor has she experienced the endless rounds of auditions (many of them resulting in rejection) that are part of a performer's life on the way up. You grow up quick and develop a thick skin when you experience those things.

Hahaha, brilliant! But at least Nigella could give Gemma, if not Steph, a few tips on how to bag someone with a few hundred mill in their back pocket. Which is ironic as Nigella has zero need to be a kept woman.

Only early twenties? What has that got to do with never reading a newspaper or magazine? Nigella Lawson is never out of the media.
