I think not knowing who Nigella is, is less to do with age and education and more to do with location, class and wealth. Nigella is very upmarket and sophisticated in terms of the food and lifestyle she specialises in. Yes, she does make a fab coca cola ham and cook with Malibu, but that's done with an ironic wink when she's slumming it. She IS dead stylish and dead posh. And extremely rich. As well as extremely clever, she's an exceptionally gifted writer. She's on another planet from Steph.
It's thinking we have a president and that that president is called Nigella Lawson. Or she thinks that's the name of the president of the USA. Either way...... Stephanie is beyond stupid. She's 22 with the maturity of a 10yr old. Nigella is neither extremely intelligent nor gifted, she is privileged. Extremely so. Something she and Steph have in common. |

No doubt there have been fame hungry/thick people in previous generations, but there was no reality TV or internet in previous generations, so people tended to become famous through some talent (e.g. singing, dancing, acting, sports, writing) or through achievement in their chosen field (e.g. science, exploration, art). Basically, you had to have talent and a strong work ethic to become famous. Many people spent years working their way though the pub and club circuit before getting the chance to showcase their talents on TV and become famous (Les Dawson being an obvious example).
Now you're classed as a celeb if you are (or were) married to someone famous, had sex with someone famous, had a boob job on the NHS, appeared in a documentary about benefit claimants, have appeared in a 'scripted fly on the wall' documentary series, claim to be a 'model' (preferably one who appears to have been drawn on with felt-tipped pens) or be related to someone who falls into one of the aforementioned categories! I think one of the reasons Stephanie is so immature is that she's never had to work as part of an ensemble in a theatre production. Nor has she experienced the endless rounds of auditions (many of them resulting in rejection) that are part of a performer's life on the way up. You grow up quick and develop a thick skin when you experience those things. |

Hmm I didn't see/notice the comment broadcast so am not clear of the context.
Not necessarily entirely ignorant. Nigella's father - Nigel Lawson was Chancellor of the Exchequer/Minister for Energy for a very long time; almost a decade. It was before she was born but even so its possible that this has lodged in her mind. |

First of all it's got nothing to do with knowing who Nigella is

She has been an established theatre actress since she was tiny, so presumably she has coped with the audition process?
I thought that title belonged to women like Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren What theatrical productions did Stephanie 'establish' herself in then ? |

Why does everyone believe her? It's obvious she's just pretending to be the endearing thicko.
Don't fall for it, it's no coincidence that every year we have housemates saying 'What does that mean' etc...All of them are just trying to copy Jade Goody and the Towie mob. You would think we would have become cynical enough to see through the charade. |

It would appear that singing and dancing took precedence over basic education.
I don't think she was putting it on to be endearing - I just think she probably missed a lot of school. If you've not heard of Nigella Lawson or Rapeseed Oil - it's not really the end of the world is it? I've probably missed more school than she has but it hasn't impaired my general knowledge. |

Who says Nigella Isn't intelligent or gifted?
Dear me. It will come as no surprise to me that you disagree but people tend to judge these issues from the stand point that their own levels are good. |

To think she has the right to vote...
Frightening isn't it? Comforting to think that she'll probably never bother to vote though. |

I think anyone in regular theatre work is an established actress, dont you? Maggie Smith is in another category. ![]() http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/...-go-on-3557745 |

I mean, Jeremy told her she looked sexy cooking ... and went on to say, like Nigella Stephanie saw no 'disconnect' in Jeremy saying ( as she thought he had ) "You look sexy cooking ... like the President" That's scarey thick |

I bet half the people on this forum under a certain age will not have a clue who Nigel Lawson is. As for Rapeseed oil, my daughter also 22 has never heard of it. If you are into cooking you may have come accross it, if not then why would someone automatically be aware of it?
