Yes, I know of several couples who have retired to India. Their standard of living is amazing. They have two homes - one in town for winter and one in the hills where it is cooler, for the summer. And believe me, neither couple were well off in UK.
Wow! This clearly deserves some serious thought?! (But I still think that poor health might be a worry - are they pretty fit?)

I enjoyed that and will stick with the series. All rather dominated by MM and Rosemary, who seem to be the biggest personalities, at the moment. Only really watched as am a Doctor Who fan and Sylvester came across as the lovely chap he is. Liked his comment to Pattie, "Can you please dress up for a meal some time?" (as she entered looking stunning) and the "...sublime to the ridiculous" remark. Interesting stuff.

We know this is simply a jaunty reality show, riding on the shirt tails of the recent two successful films, and unlikely the celebs will give it serious consideration. However, I think there's enough charm, cheapness and curiousity to arouse peoples' interest. If they haven't already, I wouldn't be surprised if the Indian tourist industry has seen an increase in those who'd like to travel there, even if just for a holiday.

If this had been a programme about retired people living in retirement places in India, I'd have been delighted to watch it.

But it's not, is it? It's another bunch of overpaid "celebrities" having an exotic holiday at licence payers' expense.

Why are they objecting to the caste system.

Britain has a caste system as well..
you cannot compare Britain's CLASS system with India's CASTE system

Well, that's true, but it does raise a number of interesting points about our later years. Not everyone (me included!) wants to end up either in a retirement apartment or a care home. Given the costs of both and the difficulties in accessing suitable support, then it makes sense to consider other options, particularly if you don't have support from family. My friends and I have discussed pooling resources and setting up a "commune" where we could live independently but have communal areas and support. Locating this in somewhere where labour is cheap makes perfect sense

Personally, I adore India having worked out there, but I've no idea about what visa you'd apply for to live there long term

With the UK's pension age as it is now, is Patti an OAP?
Roy and Jan look good for their age.

tiacat.
We retired to Rhodes Greece in 2009 cos its def cheaper than UK.We get over 300 days of sunshine in a year & thats a big plus
I always thought that Europe would be way too expensive?

She was Tia! I think there'll be some clashes to come and not from the men! The women are all pretty vocal and strong minded - particular about their likes and dislikes. Still finding their feet and are quite charmed by it all. So far.
God she really annoyed me in Im a celeb, and even in this show, she started already, she and Patti went out to find a mirror and someone asked her when she came back, how did the mirror hunt go and she said 'well it wasnt me that wanted a mirror'. Its like she has a total disconnect of how to interact with people and what they mean.

Patti's only 61! (Sounds like any excuse to get on telly?)

Lots of options - Thailand and Malaysia where English is also widely spoken.

This place looks lovely!

Why rot in England in the damp and cold with awful social care when you could enjoy your retirement years in the sunshine.
Morbidity alert. As I watched this I thought about how far a UK pension would get you in India, and that it seems like a good idea to retire there and live like a king, but the I thought "What about the healthcare as you grow older and frail?" "Will it be as good as our NHS in my dying days?"

Having seen my wife's uncle in his last days in a UK retirement home, I realised then that it didn't matter a jot what you had or where you were, he was oblivious, dying slowly in a bed in a bland room, having lived a frugal life with no kids. He left a 6 figure sum (which went elsewhere due to lawyers f-up, another story though.) which he could have been spending on himself.

Sod that for a game of soldiers. If it doesn't matter where or how you ebb away. spend your conscious time enjoying yourself, and being waited on hand and foot for a reasonable cost, spreading wealth to those that really could do with it seems a good idea.

Yes! She's the Celia Imrie character. "I only eat fish that's from the coast" and "ooh I didn't find it that hot!" to poor Roy who was sweating cobs!

I've only just watched this and thoroughly enjoyed it. It hasn't made me want to move there - I couldn't cope with the heat or the manic confusion unfortunately. Oh and that poor chicken.

I thought the atmosphere of their surrounding came over well, it was good to see them both struggling and coping with their very different surroundings and will be interesting to watch how they each cope and adjust.

Miriam is entertaining but from this side of the screen, might be a bit much to live with. Rosemary would have me twitching before a week was out. Sheesh she needs to wind down. I hope we get to to see more of the others as well.

I can see sparks flying before the end of the series but not too badly I hope.

It said in the paper that Patti was 64 (?) good looking woman whatever her age. I think Jan and Wayne (and Rosemary if she dosn't calm down) are going to be the annoying ones.

My daughter saw Sylvester at a comicon in London last year. She said he was lovely and great fun, spoke to her for ages. He was using a mobility scooter, can't exactly remember why (I think he had had an operation) but glad he's more mobile again.

Rosemary seemed to get over the chicken incident fairly easily.

And does she really think there isn't a huge discrepancy of wealth in the UK? And Miriam saying she was sure the richies were generous. They shouldn't have a choice, love - it's called taxation.

As for poverty - perhaps the Indian government could spend less on Nuclear weapons and the like, and more on health and welfare? Just a thought.

I winced a bit when the lovely, clever tour guide said how it was good karma to feed animals (when they were visiting the Temple) - giving someone of lower caste a job isn't good karma then? Or killing a chicken humanely?

Terrible system. I couldn't live there if you paid me. Not least because I couldn't sleep at night knowing I'd be dependent on "cheap labour".

I travel to India every year and know many British elderly people who have retired there. They absolutely love it. I bought a house out there some years ago and you would faint if you saw what you could get for your money out there, on the beach with views to die for (not litetally haha).

Wouldn't like it there.

Wiping your backside with your hand and then eating your food with your hands does not sound like a good combination to me.

No wonder everybody gets the runs.

So a 2 bed house, in a quiet area with a garden, somewhere a bit cooler, what sort of price would that be per month?

I read up already that its best to go for 6 months, come back for a couple, then go again rather than trying to get a full residents permit.

Google it. It's not at all like our class system, which is bad enough.
True. I've worked with Asians of different castes and they either ignore each other or make derogatory remarks. I've even seen high caste people spit after a lower caste person has left the room. It is quite horrible to witness.

It's gone on for generations so it is inbred in them.

Cannot warm to the Miriam woman at all - banging on about hating the aristocracy, the rich and the gap between poor and wealthy then saying she wont be sharing her food and is not accustomed to doing her own housework

Yeah, that is a worrying concern. They have one, Pakistan have one. Can't see that ending well.

Mutual Assured destruction seems to have stopped them from having any more wars since they both acquired nukes, though there was a brief "war" in 1999.

I certainly couldn't share a house with her, but she is making the program more interesting!

It's not just the nukes, India has a bloody space programme as well ! Why are we British tax payers still giving them £600,000,000 in aid every year ?
