Personally, I think the Christmas episode will do fine and probably get viewing figures in line with BBC1's other Christmas Day evening shows (Strictly, Eastenders, Midwife etc).
I think its going to be the new season in 2017 that will really show whether people are excited about the show finally returning/have missed it. Apart from the end of a long wait for a new season, we also have (i) a return to the spring and (ii) a new companion. So there could be plenty of buzz. I suppose my concern is that Capaldi's Doctor may actually be the reason a million+ people turned off for season 9 - and they may not be coming back while he's still in the role. |

I didn't really intend for this thread to be yet another 'I hate Capaldi/Moffat' or 'I love Capaldi/Moffat' one... god knows there are plenty of those in here.
Back to the effect of the long break between series... Maybe enough people will have forgotten why they turned off in the first place and be willing to give it another go in spring 2017. Maybe even more people will be unwilling to return seeing as the break has been so long that they feel they have left the series behind and have no wish to return. As a life long fan I'm hoping to see it return to mainstream popularity. I dont want them to course-correct and make it too childish to appeal only to children. I also dont want to see them get too bogged down in history that puts off the more casual viewer. Theres a fine balance to be found here. Something thats been missing for the last 2 years or so. ... lets hope this long break isn't another nail in the coffin. |

Had there been a situation though where the gap had been between series 10 and 11, people would have had a long while since a series, long enough to forget why they switched off, and would be returning to see a brand new style and fresh writing, with possible new Doctor and/or companion. As it stands though, I agree some may be willing to give it another try, but like I said, if they switched off from the Moffat/Capaldi era, I doubt they'll be impressed to find the same thing waiting for them. |
