Just seen that no one replied to this. Probably because no one knows the answer! I googled it and there is a name for the condition. One source said it was serious but another was a lot more positive. I think it depends on the cause as there are several. Have you got to the bottom of it yet? Hope Sonny is feeling better.

How did you find out that your dog has a high haematocrit level?

Not sure about dogs but the last blood test my cat had she had a high red blood cell count but they couldn't figure out why. They ruled out any serious stuff and just put it down to a peculiar quirk of my cat. They said you often find it in animals that live at high altitudes so maybe she has some wildcat in her or something.

Hi Mrs G and all - we were very let down over the whole thing .We were told to carefully monitor Sonny's diet and write it down .We also had to get his wee (almost impossible but we did it) I was to note how much he drank - no small feat .

So we went in armed with this - and there was a different vet .She didn't require or ask for any of the items we had brought .She looked him over and said "well he seems fine now , any problems , come back " .THIS after making many trips to them in the belief ( that they said ) Sonny may have cancer .

I wasn't happy and said "to be frank , we've had blood tests which the other vet said showed very worrying signs- high red blood cells .She has mentioned cancer twice ,and now you're just saying all is well ? "
She just blagged and it was clear she just wanted rid of us .SO , we are left with a dog who often goes off his food , becomes listless and anti- social( goes into another room and wants to be alone ) and now he is barking for long periods with no reason. Also , he has been going not just for dogs, but for people with no dogs .And we also know now he has a high red blood cell count .

Obviously we are going to have to go to a new vet -sigh .We haven't got a lot of money and are dreading the costs of the bloods, examinations, and testing they'll want to do, but we haven't got a choice to be honest .He is a lovely little dog too ,I wish they could have given us a diagnosis !

Could the new Vet not ask for the blood test results from this Vet? A bit like when a new Doctor will get the past history of you?
Or I would put in a complaint? Is this Vet part of a bigger group?

Thanks for the reply .I think we've come to a point where we don't trust the last vets findings and we think it best to get another set of bloods done.I know it will cost but he's worth it

You're right though - they will send for his records which may help the new vet understand what has gone on .
