Pistols' Bodies

Still fierce after 30 years. Christ, it's nearly 40 years!

But what do you think of Finzi's Sweet Lizbie Brown?

Not being clever: both songs are equally important to me.

Just wondering if you have any secret musical tastes

Am I right in thinking the bass line is Sid's only musical contribution to the album? Because if so, contrary to his reputation, it's pretty good.
Manages to be both incredibly disturbing and hilarious at the same time, particularly Lydon's sneery vocal.

As far as I'm aware, Sid never played on anything in the studio

Sid actually played on the track and is credited as co-writer. His bass is really low in the mix. All guitars and bass that's actually heard was done by Steve Jones, as is most of the bass playing on the album after Glen Matlock was sacked/left as Sid was laid up in hospital with Hepatitis.

Thanks for the replies here.

Be interesting to see if I can actually hear Sid's bass in there if it is so low. Could he even play guitar? He certainly looked the part. I remember my English teacher at the time, Mrs Mills, Shakespeare teacher (Merchant of Venice), saying how sad it was that someone should die at such a young age.

How much a part did Chris Thomas, the producer, have to play in the quality of the Bollocks album?

I'm fairly sure that Steve Jones played all the studio bass parts after Glen Matlock left. I don't think Sid could play at all, only hammer away in two or three fret positions on a single string.

Anti-abortion song wasn't it?

Yep, Steve played all parts after Glen left.

Producer Chris Thomas along with mixer/engineer Bill Price were essential in the making and the sound of the album. Chris Thomas was picked by Malcolm McClaren after abortive attempts to record Anarchy in the Uk by the guy who was their live sound engineer (Dave Goodman). As Chris had lots of producing experience and had previously worked on Roxy Music albums, he was chosen to hone the pistols sound.

Sid had been taught to play bass by Lemmy but was pretty bad at it. Sid's contribution on Bodies was the band's (and producer's) wish to have him play on something even if it was low down or sub sonic in the mix.

The subject matter is to do with a fan of the pistols called Pauline who had mental health issues. She'd given birth to a dead baby and had visited Johnny Rotten at his home wearing nothing but a transparent coat with the foetus in a plastic bag.

Check out the classic albums Making of Never Mind The Bollocks DVD and the Filth and the Fury documentaries.
