"Oh the night is my world
City light, painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It's the night time that flatters"

What a wonderful song and a suitably creepy video to bring out the sad, desperate lyrics which seems to be about one night stands or the sad world of a prostitute.
I didn't know Laura's version was a cover and the song was originally recorded by an Italian singer called RAF who also had a sizeable hit with the song
I'm surprised Self Control isn't held in higher regard than it is......I rarely see it featured on 80s compilation albums or included on best songs of the 80s countdowns on music channels

I only discovered Laura Branigan's music lately and I was very saddened to learn that she passed away back in 2004

I was on holiday as a 13 year old in Majorca in 1984 and the RAF version was the song that was played everywhere we went.
My mum has a 12 inch copy of it somewhere without the bit in the middle - which is what used to be the case with all music purchased in mainland Europe

I may look into more of her tunes. Anyone think Obsession by Animotion is similar. I like them both.

It is sad she died young.

I can imagine Self Control sounded like a musical revolution back in 1984 with that fizzy pop beat and synths driving the song forward.

I only discovered the Italian version a couple of years ago and thought that was released as a cheap cash in. I had no idea that RAF's version was the original. For me, this would be a classic example of where the cover version bettered the original.

no it wasnt, it really wasnt. it was largely overlooked as it plodded along, it was never 'cool' (cool being at the forefront of emerging styles). it was pretty laboured compared to what had preceded it.

however, in saying that, it was a damn good track!
