How does a boiled onion work?? Do you put a raw onion in hot water and just boil?

MJsDirtyDiana has been asked this many times by many different posters and has never answered anyone.
I'm meeting a friend at Wetherspoons at lunch time for fish n chips, so tonight a Chinese home delivery. Not sure yet what I'll be having but probably chicken and green peppers and black bean sauce with boiled rice.
Sausage & baked bean quiche with 2 sweetcorn fritters, and a 'salad' made up of baby courgette, baby leek, baby corns, mushroom and lettuce (and lots and lots of ketchup).
Sweet potato paneer and spinach bake, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, garlic mushroom, carrots and a boiled onion.
Unusually meeting my friend on a Monday as she is going on a short break on Wednesday.
I guess I'll have Steak and Ale Pie and chips
