Wow, this game really throws you in. No slow burn whatsoever like Uncharted 4 where there were lots of cutscenes before throwing you in. It is hard going from a current gen game like Witcher 3 to a last gen game like this one because the graphic difference is so strong.

Sorry, totally forgot this even had a 360 version but it was made with the current gen in mind and then downgraded to the older console.

Certainly doesn't feel like. Feels like it was made for last gen and then remastered for current gen.

Do you like anything that isn't Witcher 3? That game was ok but glitchy and abit mundane after about 1/2 way through.

Surprisingly, I'm underwhelmed so far. It's ok. Not bad, not great. The last Tomb Raider game was incredibly addictive, couldn't put the control down. Maybe it's because I haven't progressed far enough yet - I don't like the snowy setting and prefer more sunny environments.
There's a shocking lack of attention to detail when it comes to the UI. Like the fact you can't put a marker on a collectible or location once you've discovered it (why???) which is really annoying because those collectibles act as landmarks so you don't get lost. Or the way when fast travelling the map doesn't show the the collectibles so you don't know what is the nearest camp to travel to.... And bugs are unacceptable for a game that has a had a year for glitches to be discovered by its players. There's also the voice actress of Lara who is really, really annoying - overly dramatic about everything. Lara has to be the most unfit 20 something year old ever because all she ever does is whine and complain about the environment - that's when she's not huffing and puffing when climbing over the smallest objects or making very short leaps or shivering despite being snugged up in the right gear and constantly sprinting... We get it, devs, she's a "real girl".... except she's not. Being a real girl doesn't mean being weak and it's sexist to assume so. I want to see some of the old Tomb Raider back - the confident badass who is up for a challenge, not a scared little girl who doesn't know how to have fun. I mean, would it kill Lara to smile when she makes a massive discovery? Nathan Drake is who Lara used to be. Oh, and I think I may have already guessed that

Lara was a big issue for me, it felt like she took a step back from where we left her. I kind of felt like they were telling her origin story all over again. I think part of my issue is the voice actress, the breathless emotion was over done, and I have genuinely never heard anyone say city like her. |

This sounds similar to my reaction, it does get better and the gameplay is more fun when you get out of the snowy area. I was getting a bit bored in that area I must admit.

I think what the next Tomb Raider game needs is more variety of locations.

I hate when those damn wolves come for you in these games. That drum/beat music is intense the closer you get to those wolves.

I wrongly assumed after the last game that we would be heading in a new direction, with Lara having her dual wielding guns back and whatnot, not retreading the same ground from the first game. I enjoyed the story of her Dad and Croft manor but it's where my enjoyment ended. The villains were telegraphed from the start with nothing really unique or gutsy about them. I didn't really care about nay character including Lara herself, who seems to have regressed from where we were at the ending of Tomb Raider. And not just because she doesn't dual wield pistols. I enjoyed the opening to the story. The linearity really works well for Lara. The collectibles are boring to collect and I only really went for them if they were relics, since as an archaeologist that's what Lara would do. I did not particularly enjoy the fact that a lot of story and character motivation was explained through the collectibles, however. I don't want to have to sit and hear exposition through a very boring text box with voiceover. I'd much rather have a cutscene. The open world is to the games detriment in my opinion, and the customisation of Lara is uninteresting and her outfits are boring. The snowy mountain aesthetic is equally colourless and bland. Her animations, especially when climbing and jumping feel stiff and underdeveloped. I enjoyed the first game, but this one did not click with me. |

I have worked with someone who would speak exactly like her, a particularly useless junior Doctor, went to Cheltenham ladies college etc. She didn't get past her foundation years, I think she works in some Ski Resort now as a chalet girl.

So far the best mission is the final confrontation with the witch because it actually felt like a real mission and not an excuse to get collectibles for upgrades. |

The first one had various settings (or at least it felt like it) but it seems for this one the devs have gone for "bigger" rather than varied and I don't think it works for a semi open world game because a single setting is never going to be as detailed as a full open world one. The beach level in Uncharted 4 is awesome but one of my complaints about it is that we spend too much time there without enough flashbacks to break it up. I've reached the greeny part in the game now so hopefully it gets better from here as others have said.

Does anybody find that the combat in this game is way more fun than the stealth? I mean, I'm a stealth player but I nearly always go in guns ablazing in this game. Never gets old to blast the living shit out of an enemy with grenade arrows
Even Lara appears to enjoy herself this time, goading her enemies to take her on. I wish she was like that throughout. The tomb puzzles are also quite fun and require a bit more strategy than that of Uncharted 4. |

Well, just finished the game. I was right about Jacob lol .
I'm really disappointed. I never dreamed that Uncharted 4 would be way better than Tomb Raider! The main missions were good because they combined the two things that I liked which was the open combat and the puzzles but it was the stuff in between that I found tedious, even the side missions. It's jsut tickbox time. The game feels like a reboot of a reboot, like they only made it to include stuff they forgot to put in the last game and that's not good enough to justify its existence. The depressing tone coupled with a sad, boring protagonist and characters you don't care about made it a drag. The stealth and climbing were atrocious mainly because of the way Lara moves like a slippery fish. I'm one of the few that enjoyed the climbing in Uncharted 4 because Drake's movements felt weighty and real. Yeah, it was slower but it was more precise so you knew what would get you killed and what wouldn't. And maybe it's because I explored the tombs and got all the collectibles pretty early on but I found I had all the best weapons and gear throughout and so whenever I did get something new later it was always inferior than the weapon I had equipped. Also, I don't like this whole "survivor" theme running throughout. Lara is not a survivor/victim anymore, she's an explorer. She is well adept and knows how to clear an entire room with ease. In the first game the whole "survivor" angle worked because Lara was thrown into the wilderness through no fault of her own and forced to fend for herself with little resources. Here she willingly goes in (unequipped!) like an obsessed mad woman slaughtering people left and right and going to the unknown without any hesitation and she knows how to gather stock to craft weapons. So the whole "against all odds" thing doesn't work. She's experienced and capable now and they need to do away with this lost little lamb act. Tired of it. Looking at the achievement list it seems only 30% of people who purchased the game actually finished it with only about 50% even making it halfway through. Says it all. 6/10. |

I agree with most of what you say here, although I think I liked it a bit more than you. We still have the same issues with it though. The title of the next game was spotted on an employee's laptop and it looks like it won't be developed by CD, but Eidos Montreal. If that is true then I hope they move things along and have Lara less tortured and more enthusiastic about what she is doing. Here is a link in case you haven't seen it. I can't fairly compare it to Uncharted, I think I will always have rose tinted glasses on when I think of that series now. The call backs to the other games in 4 showed me how much nostalgia I have for the series already, and the prologue was perfect. So I will leave the comparison to other people lol. |
