There are some very odd posts on this thread but I'll clear up a few things, based on what I know:

1. If Mike Dickin was still alive, he'd have celebrated his 73rd birthday on Wednesday. He was in fairly poor health in the final years of his life, which partly explains why his shows were cut down to weekends only, and why he presented them down an ISDN line from a dentist's surgery close to where he lived in Cornwall. His shows in his final year or two weren't of the same quality as earlier shows, except on occasions.

If he was still alive, he may well have emigrated to France or somewhere warmer (that had been on his agenda for years). I suppose with the way technology has gone, it's possible he'd have been up for doing a weekend show, but I doubt he'd be a daily presenter somehow.

2. Peter Deeley is alive but is now running a country hotel and has no intention of returning to the industry.

3. There's not a hope in hell of Tommy Boyd joining the station. That's a fact.

4. It is far more likely that James Whale will be a regular presenter on the station before much longer.

Yes I agree James Whale would be great in the 10 till 1 time slot. I wouldn't be surprised if the bosses are considering bringing him on back board permanently. He would be very popular he's certainly a good listen and would help to drive the listening figures further up. One other thing I would very much love is for the bosses to give Tommy Boyd a show at the weekend.
I've drifted away from TalkRadio over the past couple of months. The only listening I've done is with parts of George Galloway on Friday evenings. I haven't listened to Iain Lee's show for about 2 months now and have missed the last couple of weeks of Howard Hughes on Sunday night too. But mention of James Whale really pricks my ears up. I need something/someone to renew my interest again.

I suspect Tommy Boyd is only marginally more likely to join TalkRadio than the late Mike Dickin. I wonder if he would be as good as he used to be though? It's been nearly 15 years since his TalkSport sacking from his previous weekend "Human Zoo" show. That is so memorable.

Over 10 years ago Neil Rogers was broadcasting a 4 hour show from Canada to a station 5 days a week in Miami and his health was in question, technology has moved on quite a lot in 10 years so if the inclination was there I couldn't see it being a problem.

Iain asked his bosses to get Tommy on board when he got the job in talkRADIO but he said they weren't interested.

It's well and good having the likes of Iain, GG and James but it definitely needs more callers and when they do get callers not the same ones ever night/day

Sad that you're drifting away from talkRADIO Rich I think it's doing very well for a new station with no outside advertising and publicity. I particularly like the shows with Jon Holmes, Julia Hartley-Brewer, George Galloway, Iain Lee and now James Whale. This doesn't mean I think the station is running at it's full potential however, I hate to pick out shows for criticism but I have to be honest if they could modify the schedule a bit by bringing in more people of the class of Whale I would happily see some shows replaced and I have in mind the weekday 6.00am-10.00am slot, Saturday 6.00am-8.00am slot, Saturday 8.00am-11.00am slot and the Saturday 1.00pm-3.00pm slot. [oh and I can't stand Bob Mills]

I just feel the breakfast show should be a lot stronger to rival Ferrari [if that's possible because I do rate that show highly] and very much the same on Saturdays it could be much much better.

I realise it's all about opinion and some people might love these slots but there we are this is my view.

Yes, I like his Sunday show as well. It is self-indulgent, but I enjoy hearing about older comedians and wallowing in a bit of nostalgia.

Not any more. And he's younger than James Whale!

That's a shame in a way. I've heard very nice things about his running of that country retreat. A lovely place by all accounts. I hope Peter's well.

HMMM quite a call from Andy last night to Iain Lee.

I have to say I thought some of what the caller said was true, I admit I wouldn't have dared say it to Iain myself on-air and that's why I thought it was a good call.

Interesting that people are recommending people in their 60s as potential presenters. The original Talk Radio had a lot of people in and around their 40s. If Digital Spy was around then, would people be recommending people who were in their 60s back then?

See the "Iain Lee on talkRADIO" thread for discussion of his show. Iain posted the call up on YouTube.

I sadly agree with you, i'm sure Paul Ross is a nice guy and in an afternoon slot he would be fine to listen to. However at breakfast its not a great listen, Ferrari is top class and his breakfast show, whatever you may think his views is excellent. Ferrari's breakfast show covers the big issues without getting too heavy, its very pacey as well which is perfect for the time of the day.

I genuinely think if Ferrari steps down on LBC they have big problems, at present the only person who comes anywhere close is Iain Dale and he's stated before he would much prefer to stay at drive due to living so far out of London.

With PR on breakfast it really does seem like talkRadio are pulling their punches in terms of scheduling.
I don't particularly care much for her or her self-important world view, but I wonder if JHB might have been the better bet in that slot when LBC is so strong at that time of the day.

Each to their own, of course, but I like Paul Ross and think Ferrari is odious and the very last thing I want to hear at any time, let alone breakfast. If it wasn't for Vanessa on BBC London, PR would be my first choice as I like his style.

On the Tommy Boyd front, as much as I would love him to return to the airwaves, this isn't the right station in its current form.

Tommy's best work was the afternoon show, and that worked because of the daft but plausible phone in topics. Regular listeners knew what was going on and played along, taking it to the next degree of ridiculousness, new listeners who had found the show by accident took the bait.

A station like Talk in its current form doesn't get enough casual listeners, and certainly not enough callers to make that format work.

I'd like to hear Nick Abbott on a more freeform format again, but I suspect he is seen as too similar to Iain.

At risk of repeating myself, Jake Yapp's Sunday morning show is excellent. It's so nice to have something like this back on a Sunday morning - something balancing some serious topics with light-hearted ones, plus a bit of 'zany' humour, too.

He made a joke about his own show earlier, saying it was a cheap rip off of Jon Holmes, but for me, it's better than Jon's. His partnership with Laura is ideal and they bounce perfectly off each other, without some of the schoolboy snigger-y stuff that Jon unfortunately leaks over into sometimes.

I thoroughly recommend it.

Watching Olly Mann on The Wright Stuff. Would make a good signing for a Weekend Tech show, or any type of show.

Jon's show today started with a clip of Iain's show on Friday where he says that talkRADIO shuts down until Jon's show on Monday afternoon.

There are bound to be a lot of references to Jon's front page tabloid experience today.
He's playing Black or White by Michael Jackson!

Ginger Dave is producing today.

When the first mention of Paul Ross and roundabouts near Maidenhead was made, he said that Paul Ross has been talking about Jon a lot this morning. I didn't hear it, but I guess it was a good opportunity for a little revenge.

Jon's explained the whole debacle, totally straight, for the last few minutes.
