Yep - Jon Holmes even appointed himself the TalkRadio head of music on his first show and played quite a bit of Florence and the Machine that afternoon IIRC

I don't think so. Certainly outside of an election period, I believe presenters can be as biased as they like on commercial stations. There is a proviso that they must allow people to phone in and challenge his opinions. Of course, with the lack of callers that talkRADIO usually has, the opposing view doesn't get aired so it sounds like a monologue.

I really hope that TalkRADIO is increasing their listenership. Julia HB is a much more sensible alternative to the lunatic rantings at the same time elsewhere and Jon Holmes can be an entertaining show and better than the non-stop NHS and Catholicism discussion from Shelagh Widdecombe over on LBC. The appearances of Whale/Ash and Galloway are excellent and Iain Lee is always good value. Long may they continue. LBC need to up their game and have some competition.

Sadly until Talk Radio get on FM and Freeview / Freesat they will be held back. If they have the opportunity and money to do it they really could knock LBC of its perch and give it some proper competition for the betterment of all listeners view points. |

As I cannot pick up Talk Radio in the car (I'm not ripping out my CD/FM Radio!) and at home need to use the internet to pick up this creates issues. I have been listening to Julia via the internet and yes whilst I may not go with all her views at times, she is a refreshing change to the ranting’s on LBC at this time slot.

Freeview/Freesat is often mentioned but digital TV listening is only a small proportion of digital listening and is also quite expensive. Online is the most practical option for home listening where there is no DAB reception. It is also possible to listen to internet radio in the car through smartphone apps. talkRADIO is not a direct competitor to LBC. Yes they are both speech based stations but LBC is almost exclusively a current affairs phone-in station whereas talkRADIO discusses a wider range of topics. |

He did as the running gag was Con had to keep telling him to stop as they weren't at the "other place" any more and he didn't have to play Florence every 10 minutes any more.

Anyone got audio of Jon's first show - I'd like a copy. I remember posting in this thread saying talkRADIO had 'come alive', as Jon's opening monologue finished and he slickly hit the vocal for Florence 😂
Here's the first show, including most of the handover from JHB: https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?c...2YKirgmpmtw9uX Florence and the Machine is played at 16:27, then at 18:00 I recorded JHB as well on the first day so the beginning of the handover from JHB is at the end of this file: https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?c...aBAwXvCYTGat47 |

A very early schedule announcement was made this afternoon. We learned that Jake Yapp will still be doing Sunday mornings on 23 April. talkRADIO looks like it will last beyond its one year anniversary.
Jon is giving away a place on the London Marathon, in association with Fullers. The show will be following the competition winner's progress as they train for the event. Jon then said Jake Yapp's show on 23 April will follow the progress of whoever wins the competition. |

James Whale or Nigel Farage?
Personally I would rather listen to James Whale, but I expect TalkRadio to lose listeners to LBC for the first hour of his show. Presumably Nigel Farage won't be appearing on James Whale's show again.
Now may be the time to move James Whale to drive. |

Even if you assume talkRADIO and LBC are direct competitors, you are assuming that Farage is such a draw that people are going to switch from alternative stations just for that hour that he's on, and in much greater numbers than in other schedule clashes.
I don't think the two stations were direct competitors when Clive Bull had the hour Nigel Farage will occupy. Clive Bull has serious debates and James Whale has entertaining discussions. Nigel Farage and James Whale are both big personalities who have controversial views. They are politically incorrect. They are not afraid to say what they think. Those are the things listeners like about them. I think listeners who like them both will choose Nigel Farage. Quote:
For example, some people might switch over to LBC to listen to James O'Brien instead of JHB.
That clash is different. The t wo have opposing views, so people may decide which one to listen to based on their own political views. Left-wing people may generally opt for James O'Brien, whereas right-wing people may generally prefer Julia Hartley-Brewer.The formats of the two shows are different too. JOB's show is a discussion show where as JHB's show has evolved into a compilation of interviews, more comparable to 5 Live Daily. Quote:

It is, so I'm surprised that is the slot they gave to James Whale.

Judging by some of the contributions James Whale has read out, some of his listeners are Farage supporters and they may prefer to listen to Farage instead of Whale if they are both on at the same time. I am sure TalkRadio would pree4r to have those listeners.

JoB is not a lefty nor a socialist as he has said before now. What he offers is a calculated persona that is a bit less of the fascistic right that is now lbc. it amazes me as to the number of peaple who incorrectly count JoB as a lefty or socialist whilst he is a blairite - christian pro israel neco con he is not an out and out neo liberal though he does enjoy its fruits. |
