Tell me about it.
They should just play the National Anthem then close down for the night.

Simulcasting from 1am is such a huge mistake. I'd been listening and enjoying Iain Lee rather a lot and felt inclined to carry on listening because of it, but when the TalkSport station kicked in, much as I like Mike Graham, as soon as I heard that big gob loud mouthed Parry I could not turn it off quick enough. Plus the failure to acknowledge that they had taken in listeners from the new day one of TalkRadio was nothing short of astonishing.

How long before a rethink on overnight simulcasting I wonder? Because I reckon it will have cost them potential listeners at 1am who may well have stuck with the station.

I'd like to think it's a matter of when rather than if. Perhaps when everything's settled down?

Major breaking news from Brussels; it'll be interesting to see how they cover it. Mentioned by PR going into the 7:30 news and in the news itself.

Indeed. I imagine it might affect Jon Holmes' 'zany' approach...? Mind you, the sound is so bad today that I don't think I can listen for much longer anyway.

They seem to be handling the breaking news pretty well, although I've just heard Paul punt for 'your thoughts and reaction', which is unlikely to add much useful insight in a situation like this.

But at least Paul's being quite responsible in what he's saying and not going down the sensationalist route that others no doubt will. Something tells me this isn't an issue that Julia Hartley-Brewer should be allowed anywhere near...

Yes, he had a chat with Jonny and Ash for a few minutes.

I agree. Surely the station will call in a serious news heavyweight reporter in these circumstances, this usually happens on other radio stations.

Nope - she's on. Not massively surprised as she's a competent enough presenter with a journalistic background. My main problem is that she's not known for her tact or tolerance, so not ideal in a situation where level-headed, cautious reporting is required.

In her handover with Paul Ross just before 10, she was already speculating about the death toll.

Tried to listen to Iain Lee last night whilst out in the car after 10pm but the sound was just dreadful, I had no choice but to re-tune. Are they intending to sort that out ?

I had been recording DAB because of the poor quality internet stream, but after the upgrade yesterday afternoon, I found the stream satisfactory and better than DAB so I have now stopped using DAB as streaming is more convenient for me. However I haven't tried DAB since yesterday. The 64 kbps bitrate is the same as LBC and 5 Live so should sound no worse than those.

Did you catch any of the Jonny and Ash Gould show last night Ven I know you like them from the old talkRADIO days?. I heard some of it and thought they worked together really well, Ash did a little survey of what makes a London black cabbie happy.

I don't think the poor sound quality on DAB is down to bitrates, when LBC was on the regional muxes at 48kbps it was listenable, this just sounds BAD.

The station just sounds poor in general, from the imaging to the sound quality - it's a real shame because this has potential to be a great station
I hope this doesn't set the tone for what Virgin will sound like
Erwin

They sound by all means the internet stream, they have a simple badly tweaked single band compressor/limiter with bad attack and release times.

Fingers crossed for Virgin, that's a music station so I hope they using decent processing. The old Virgin sounding great though.

They have reduced the volume on DAB quite a bit, but it's still a bit too compressed, just a lot quieter.

It sounds to me like everything is too loud. I'm not an expert in any way, but its the effect you get in Audition/Cool Edit when you amplifiy too far and the sound wave goes orange.

It's definitely NOT, 100% NOT, just a 'low quality DAB bitrate' thing. I hope they realise people are not moaning about SDL2, poor coverage or the low bitrate - its a processing problem that really needs sorting asap.

Sure, it's a processing thing on the streaming side and DAB. Don't know if its the same output for both.
