After around four attempts to retune successfully I can now get talkRADIO on my Pure Evoke -1!

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall of the first BBC3CR managers meeting after Monday night's show...

So, did Mr Lee have anything to say about us last night?
Errrr - yes.
What was the worst bit?
That part where he played the 3CR jingle and then obliterated it with gunfire.

Jon Holmes' show is brilliant. My only concern is that most of the humour is nowhere near broad enough for commercial radio. Hope I'm wrong.

I think that's a very good point. I think JH's style might (commercially speaking) be better suited to a weekend slot - an appointment to listen type show.

His show HAS to be moved to drivetime sooner rather than later IMO

Basing this on the Dennie (the boss) interview where the 'lengthy contract negotiations' were mentioned...

I wonder if Jon Holmes was a late addition and was originally intended to be on Drive?

However, Jon Holmes had been on a weekday breakfast show for quite a while until quite recently, and only lost it one of the biggest names in the history of British radio.

I didn't think there could be anyone worse than Chris Moyles (IMHO)

I wonder if that had been the idea but contract negotiations were slow so they drafted in Sam Delaney for Drive but then, last minute secured Jon's services.

I have heard very little of his show to pass comment but judging by the reactions on here I think he'll be moved to Drive or indeed Breakfast fairly soon.

Really? Do tell us more. Is the programme on a free podcast?

From what I've heard so far, its not a patch on LBC, can't see myself listening long-term.

Is it really viable?

It's not LBC.

It offers something different & as such, it is completely viable.

Yes, I feel the target audience is different. If it considers itself to be a challenger to LBC on the phone-in shows, it needs to ditch its 0844 number.

Feedback welcome. If they work (or not) let me know. I'll extend to other programmes.”

Many thanks for this. All has worked perfectly until today. Only the 1300 half hour has come through for Jon Holmes. Any ideas?

Maybe they are deliberately positioning themselves away from relentless phone-ins. I originally assumed they had stocked up on guests etc. for insurance in case there are no calls, but having thought about it again perhaps calls were never intended to be the bread and butter. In the case of Paul Ross, Jon Holmes and Jonny Gould there are enough people in the studio to provide enough material for a whole show. Even Iain Lee, who is getting by far the most calls, has Katherine to chat to most of the time.

I am not old enough to have listened the orginial talkradio, but I do love speech based radio and I was a big talksport fan (still am of H&J and the two mikes) so I was really interested in the launch of talkradio. certainly seems less heavy than the modern LBC and is in many ways a throwback to when they had gardening and cooking for example at weekends. I was not aware of the phenomena that appears to be Ian Lee, so I will listen to his show on demand as Ian Collins on LBC is my first choice

Well I have heard this station a few times now and switched to some other programme. Seems to consist of unfunny people making corny jokes talking to reality tv non-entities. Perhaps I ve tuned in at the wrong time or there is a market for this stuff.

I haven't listened much yet, but it's not as good as I remember the old Talk radio.... Mike Dicken, James Whale, Nick Abbott etc.
The Difference
23-03-2016
I haven't really listened to any non-sport talk radio since talkSPORT (my station of choice - at least until last week!) became a 24-hour sports radio station in 2012, although I'd listened to the non-sport output on said station regularly for the dozen years before that. While I wasn't looking forward to talkRADIO as much as I was talkSPORT 2 (which has gotten off to a great start as far as I'm concerned), I've given the shows that caught my eye in the new talk station's schedule a chance and I've really enjoyed what I've heard.

Iain Lee, who I'd only heard good things about but had never really made a point of listening to at length, has been a revelation, so engaging and funny, working ever so well with both his co-host Katherine and the callers. I can see myself moving away from talkSPORT's Sports Bar to listen to him on a regular basis. I've always been a big fan of Ash Gould from his work on that show and with talk hosts of old in James Whale and Tommy Boyd, so I caught up with the first Brothers Gould show with Jonny on demand and really enjoyed that too I'll be dropping into that show when it doesn't clash with my sports watching and listening! I'd never listened to Jon Holmes before this week, but his opener on Monday was riotous. Like SoulBoy I'm a big Hawksbee & Jacobs fan, but on first listen Jon sounds like a really good alternative. Based on his talkSPORT work alone (not heard him on talkRADIO yet), I don't rate Sam Delaney at all - and as I don't rate talkSPORT's Drive show too, I'd love to hear either Holmes or the Goulds being moved to talkRADIO's 4-7pm slot.

I take my hat off to The Wireless Group - they've launched talkRADIO and talkSPORT 2 within a week of each other, and as someone who likes my sport and a bit of talk radio I think both stations are superb. Both new stations are actually overshadowing the main talkSPORT for me, which (live sport and off-peak magazine shows aside) has become very formulaic in recent years. I can see myself drifting away from talkSPORT and listening to these two new stations on a regular basis.

My feeling is that this type of Talk radio won't work in this country as it has been tried before on the 1st TalkRadio plus City Talk & Talk 107 & we all know what happened to them . In the US with the likes of Howard Stern this type of talk radio has done well over Many years , but the UK is very different in its tastes ( boring ) people seem to love the LBC news style of debates here . Having said all that I would guess Ian Lee has the biggest audience by a mile at the moment .I hope I'm wrong , but as someone else has said Drivetime needs to be looked at A.S.A.P

If you tune into BBC One at the time of a programme you don't like, would you dismiss the whole TV station on that basis? Of course not. talkRADIO has a wide range of shows so you have to listen to each one to see if you like it. Given the diversity it would be quite normal to like some shows and dislike others. It's not like LBC where it is quite likely you would end up hearing a phone-in about the news. But even there, people like one presenter and not another.

Only thing is.. If you put him on breakfast it's a completely different station sound really.

Don't get me wrong I'm absolutely loving the show - but it sticks out a bit in the daytime schedule. I listen at work tho so all good
