I think that Talk Radio saw a weakness in the LBC schedule at 10am when James O'Brien starts his daily waffling monologue and have put up their best presenter JHB to take advantage of it.

![]() I gave the Jonny Gould and Ash show a first listen at 8.30pm tonight while soaking myself in the bathroom and was very unimpressed indeed. They had Lembit Opik as a guest but I began thinking I was actually listening to TalkSport in error and had to check because they spent ages chatting about bloody football and Leicester being top of the premier league and Aston Villa in the drop zone. WHY? There's TalkSport for all that kind of repetitively inane footy chat so why has it crept into TalkRadio in the very first week too? Off it went after about 15 minutes. ![]() Later between 10pm and 10.30pm I stuck Iain Lee on and loved his interview with Andy Partridge of the band XTC. A great way to begin his show I thought and Andy made a great engaging interviewee, and Iain was clearly a fan of his. This is by far the best show on the station so far. ![]() Heard the trailer for Howard Hughes Unexplained Show on Sunday night. Looking forward to it, but he named somebody he will be talking to on the show who he has previously not so long ago spoken with on his podcast if I recall correctly and I am wondering if he is going to be using some of his interviews from his extensive podcast archive during his radio show on TalkRadio. I'll be listening out intently. |

Or Jon Holmes if he accidentally goes a bit too far with some innuendo, like the "birds that sound like body parts" feature on Wednesday.

It does indeed. Didn't get around to re-scanning on Thursday so will try to remember sometime on Friday and hope for success. Thanks for that link, and the prank one previously.

Is that the same Jon Holmes who appears, from time to time, on that distinctly, very unfunny The Now Show?

If you get those stations that proves that your radio is capable of picking up stations in the full DAB band and you have done a full retune so maybe you just have to reposition your radio or aerial in a higher place or preferably outside. Reception should be easy where you are because there is a transmitter just south-east of Milton Keynes.

Talk radio are shooting themselves in the foot with the basic retuning instructions on their website - I have now tuned in on all 3 of my DAB receivers, but in each case the basic UK retune failed, a full (aka rest of world) retune was required.
On the positive side, it might be the case that people likely to listen to talkRADIO will have bought their DAB in the last few years and so will have a radio that does a full retune by default. Cars in particular have mostly only had DAB in recent years. The station should be promoting online reception the most, especially using phone apps, because it covers more of the country. The jingles do say "online and DAB", putting online first, so they are already doing that. |

since Virgin when Jon was sacked, I think he's pretty experienced now at just where to draw the line. he's right on the edge of that line often but never goes over it. also, if you are talk radio, you know what you are getting when you employ Jon Holmes so his show won't come as a shock to them. I'm enjoying JHB, makes a nice change at that time of morning not to have to listen to the lefty sh*t being churned out by JOB on LBC.
Have listened to JHB, not for me I'm afraid, firstly she needs to "calm down" - far too exuberant and I don't like her not shying away from her obvious right-wing bias. I take the middle road and tune to Robert Elms on BBC London, a lovely guy, been in the job for 21 years, knows his audience and never patronises anyone. Not overwhelmed with Talk Radio so far, not particular keen on Jon Holmes who definitely should be moved to an evening slot, IMO of course.

Yep you have to be a real 'fan' to tune into James O'Brien, a man so up himself he comes out the other side and then goes for a long walk down the road

Well I certainly agree with Ven on James O'Brien, it's a shame really because I like the topics and the quality of the calls it's just James O'Brien I can't stand.
![]() I also used to really like his Mystery Hour spot, I liked it so much I download tonnes of them from the podcast section but he annoyed me so much on them I deleted them off the computer, again loved the callers and the hour of questions but he drove me nuts. Heard a talkRADIO promo I really liked this morning around 11.30am, they're pretty good at making decent promos this lot see if anyone else likes it if you didn't hear it. >> http://bit.ly/1pMvFXf << |

Robert's not a mockney, born and bred in North-West London and has never strayed that far from there. Thank you for your kind question but I'm fine thanks and have not been unwell

I've just tried listening to DAB for the first time in a few days and I thought it was worse than ever, until I realised that Jonny had a sore throat. There were four calls in direct succession which is more than I've heard on any show except Iain's. Ash was taking calls on sore throat remedies. The first caller complained that they didn't have a catch up service and Ash said it is only the first week. I was screaming "Listen Again" at the radio, however the next caller told him that they did have a catch up service. The next caller was calling from Exeter, showing that the lack of DAB is no barrier to listening in Devon.
I think Jonny and Ash is my third favourite show. It seems they talk about everything and anything. |
