I've just tried listening to DAB for the first time in a few days and I thought it was worse than ever, until I realised that Jonny had a sore throat. There were four calls in direct succession which is more than I've heard on any show except Iain's. Ash was taking calls on sore throat remedies. The first caller complained that they didn't have a catch up service and Ash said it is only the first week. I was screaming "Listen Again" at the radio, however the next caller told him that they did have a catch up service. The next caller was calling from Exeter, showing that the lack of DAB is no barrier to listening in Devon.

I think Jonny and Ash is my third favourite show. It seems they talk about everything and anything.
I'm enjoying Jonny and Ash, it is totally random, and clearly not very much planning.

On the John Holmes show earlier, I found the lift thing funny as well.

since Virgin when Jon was sacked, I think he's pretty experienced now at just where to draw the line. he's right on the edge of that line often but never goes over it. also, if you are talk radio, you know what you are getting when you employ Jon Holmes so his show won't come as a shock to them. I'm enjoying JHB, makes a nice change at that time of morning not to have to listen to the lefty sh*t being churned out by JOB on LBC.
Reassuring to hear you say that because I'm enjoying his show. I agree with other comments here that he would suit drive time well - just the kind of brainless fun I feel like in the late afternoon.

Well I certainly agree with Ven on James O'Brien, it's a shame really because I like the topics and the quality of the calls it's just James O'Brien I can't stand.

I also used to really like his Mystery Hour spot, I liked it so much I download tonnes of them from the podcast section but he annoyed me so much on them I deleted them off the computer, again loved the callers and the hour of questions but he drove me nuts.

Heard a talkRADIO promo I really liked this morning around 11.30am, they're pretty good at making decent promos this lot see if anyone else likes it if you didn't hear it.

I'm one of the minority who actually like JoB. He and Nick Abbott are the only LBC presenters who interest me at all. I admit he can come across as very patronising and superior but as smarmy as he is I can help but agree with him most of the time.

If you get those stations that proves that your radio is capable of picking up stations in the full DAB band and you have done a full retune so maybe you just have to reposition your radio or aerial in a higher place or preferably outside. Reception should be easy where you are because there is a transmitter just south-east of Milton Keynes.
I know, if you mean the one at Brickhill then I can see it directly from my home even though it's almost 9 miles away.

I don't doubt for a second O'Brien has a massive army of listeners that listen every day he's just not for me that's all, thank god we're all different and like different things or it'd be pretty boring in places like this eh.

I also like JoB and think talkradio is not going to bother him, he is only up against JHB not exactly a political heavyweight. What/who is talkradio's target audience anyway? Seems to be firing in all directions at the moment.

It's a good question, but perhaps they are going back that 'appointment to listen' idea, where people will just turn onto the acts they like.

LBC are their only real competition, I suppose, and they are clearly making a move away constant politics, re-hashed throughout the day. I really, really like that talkRADIO have lined up a magazine-style schedule for their weekends. Even though not every topic is of interest to me, I love that they are doing specialist stuff and not just the boring 'vanilla' of LBC these days.

Agreed. It's more reminiscent of how LBC used to be in its glory days of the 1980s.

Good to hear Ronni from Radio X getting a mention on Jon Holmes yesterday.

Still catching up on last nights Iain lee show after a bad bout of man flu

Love the unofficial podcast feed of the half hour listen again files

I suppose, as all the presenters constantly remind us, they are finding their feet at the moment. I like the variety - something for everyone and with the listen again it's not like you need to miss your favourite show. I happened to catch Alexis Conran this afternoon and found it really interesting. I just really hope they can get more callers over time because for me that is what makes radio really great.

I think there has been a slight increase in calls. Hopefully that continues.

Still cannot understand why talkRADIO, talkSPORT 2 and Virgin cannot broadcast on other platforms. Looking at Sky earlier, I noticed a number of radio channels blank: 0123 0125 0126 0127 0132 - 0136 0140 - 0142 etc etc. Are these blank due to bandwidth on Sky? If not, then you'd think TWG would use them.

They still have the money available after returning around half of the UTV sale to shareholders. Perhaps it isn't good value for money?

How many people listen to TalkSport on those platforms, as a percentage of the TalkSport audience?

I've just been looking at the licence application:

http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/binari...undDigital.pdf

The distinctiveness table compares talkRADIO with LBC:

talkRADIO will distinguish itself through an accessible and
entertaining style and the breadth of genres covered, including TV &
film, technology, health & lifestyle, consumer advice, entertainment
and comedy.

In addition, LBC’s heritage is in London, where it has an FM licence
and from where it obtains 85% of its current listening hours.
talkRADIO will seek to provide a service for the whole of the UK
from launch.
And in the audience assessment, talkRADIO's overlap with LBC would appear to be limited:

Concentrating on the stations which exhibit some potential overlap in the
tastes and interests catered to, YouGov’s findings indicate that only a small
proportion of potential listeners to the Sound Digital services are current
listeners to the potentially overlapping Digital One service:

• Only 6% of potential talkRADIO listeners currently listen to LBC (the
most popular stations amongst this group were BBC Radio 2, BBC
Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 Live)

I've listened to the first two hours of Jake Yapp so far, hoping it would be like his (in)famous test transmission

http://pc.cd/RwLctalK

He does have the same sidekick in Laura Shavin. The first hour was sort of like radio version of Channel 4's Last Leg. There was TV Club too, just as on the test transmission. Then there was massive gear change at 9.30 when he had someone talking about how the Americans are militarily gearing up for World War 3.

I only caught a bit of it but agree with both of you it sounded like very good listening so last night I download it via the Listen Again onto my MP3 player to listen to later.

I did the same with the 2 Mikes [it's 3 hours of the best of the 2 Mikes] by the way was this available when it only went out on talkSPORT does anyone happen to know?, I'd never noticed it before if it was.

[Welcome to the thread by the way RightHand]

Do you mean, was it possible to download 30 minute mp3s using the talkSPORT website? Yes it was and indeed I was hoping that talkRADIO would have a similar system and luckily it does. Note that the Two Mikes have edited podcasts on the talkSPORT site.

1. talkRADIO website. [for the 2 Mikes]
2. Choose show on Listen Again.
3. Choose 30 minute segment.
4. Right click on black viewing screen.
5. Choose "Save Video As"
6. Select folder to save it in.

It saves it as an MP3 audio file and it actually doesn't take very long to download every segment.

Me too, I'll be listening with interest.
I'm also looking forward to The Unexplained with Howard Hughes on at 10pm.

As a fan of the original TalkRadio, I've been quite impressed so far. A lot of the programming has been quite innovative. A very welcome addition to speech radio and I hope they do well.

Although a listener from the very start of Talk Radio UK I have never heard a Howard Hughes show but I will after tonight when I download it tomorrow morning from the 'listen again' feature onto my MP3 player hope it's as good as I've read everywhere.

Bizarrely, and I hadn't noticed it until now, only 2 out of the 3 hours of the car/technology programme from yesterday was repeated today. They cut out the technology hour, and that is why the name of the show is different on Sundays.

I was listening to this and found it especially bizarre as the host had just said they were "really looking forward to hour 3" or something similar.

Did anyone else listen to Penny Smith on Saturday breakfast, I found that quite enjoyable although evidently early days still
