Those are supposed to be about half an hour long as they are "best of" podcasts. talkRADIO does not do official full show podcasts but plan to do so in the future (see my message from earlier today).

Also here from Matt H (@lentini)

a lot of people (quite rightly) wont go looking for 3rd party recordings (because of what is often bundled with such things or it seems more likely injected into the advert banners of those hosting sites - this is not to say there is anything wrong with the IL recordings just the overall genre of unofficial bootleg or crack sites... which attract those with malicious files they want to dupe people with )

those with norton installed will find their browser will block them from the site IL has been saved to

those with norton installed should be banned from the internet and have their computers crushed.

but I see your point.

I've been listening to TR from its start..... and i'm disappointed to say it isn't coming up to my expectations. I preferred it in its original form, it was definitely better then with loads of callers.
I'd still rather have it than not have it and will probably stick with it in the hope it'll get better....... but its a pale imitation of how it used to be.
Agree with this.

I would like more callers too.

I thought that it was inevitable at the start as it was a new venture and they needed to get the word out to all an sundry, but they've being going long enough now to have increased the number of callers.

They need to switch to an 03 number, otherwise things might not change.

You say that, but the link Norton thinks looks like a phishing site does look suspect.

That is not necessarily true it could also mean they are encouraging conversation in general between the listening public, not phoning in and talking to the presenter. I'm aware the presenters call out the phone number on a regular basis but that doesn't mean they are desperate for calls either. It could merely be giving the impression they want calls, but the company line is to slowly phase out the listeners input maybe get them used to having shows with very little callers. Ultimately it boils down to this, either they planned to have the expensive number to limit calls on purpose, because they want the listeners to get used to a more phone interview format. Or the bosses are complete idiots they genuinely wanted a steady flow of calls to each show, not realising a premium number that could cost over 50p a minute might cause a slight problem.
No way is it the first piece I highlighted. Wanting to discourage verbal input from the word go, that could never be a serious proposition. No, it's most likely the second piece I've highlighted. When a station, wherever it is, styles itself as a "talk radio" station then that means to most people a listener input station. Otherwise they might as well have named it TalkToYouRadio instead.

Personally the only shows i've enjoyed listening to so far are Johnny & Ash, Iain Lee & The Unexplained. I'm not in a position to listen to Jon Holmes easily due to my job working late shifts, but from what i've heard I reckon i'd probably enjoy listening to him also. One thing is for sure if Iain Lee's show had only 2 or 3 calls throughout and became more pre-arranged interview driven I would definitely be tuning out. I like the interaction with callers some regular, some one off's like the drunk aussie teachers. I feel it makes for a very entertaining show that random mixture that only callers can bring. Despite the Gould brothers having a lack of calls I like their banter and with the few listeners they do have phoning in they always have a good laugh with them. The Unexplained is not helped by the lack of genuine callers, also some of the guests sound a bit monotone & boring and some topics that are discussed are hardly going to engage the listeners. I can imagine some people thinking 'this is a load of tosh' and switching off which is a shame as I do like the show format, but it may not have a wide enough appeal. Maybe he would be better off sticking to controversial and popular topics such as ghosts & poltergeists, ufo's and various conspiracies. The lock ness monster probably isn't the ideal subject matter when initially trying to build a show up.
Regarding Howard Hughes Unexplained show, and writing as a long time fan and listener to his Unexplained podcast, I do think this is the one show that probably does not need general listeners calling into it so much. Look what happened the other weekend, a jokey prank caller. Pre-arranged guests and discussion suit the format best, and that is why I feel his podcasts work so well, seemingly better than the three shows he's done on TalkRadio so far. I really do not feel like he has hit the ground running with his Unexplained show and has kicked off with some rather poor guests and hackneyed old topics. The Loch Ness monster last week - give me a break! Three months from now will be a far better time to judge things though, as it remains very early days and I'm sure there will be tweaks. Not sure I want to hear too many ghost topics on the Unexplained however. I tend to zone out of those on his podcasts, like I do with mediums, aka charlatans.

I don't want to rag on Howard'sb but it is of very little interest to me, and I fear that may be the case for all but a tiny crackpot minority who actually believe this nonsense (at least in the UK). Okay so maybe two thirds of Americans believe we never went to the moon but I just don't think we are that way inclined over here.

If it were a bit more of a pisstake, with a sceptical host, like when James Whale had Derek Acorah and similar guests years ago, it would be a lot more entertaining.

As it is, I find it both an insult to my intelligence and a waste of my time. In my humble opinion it begs to be pranked.

Or just "The Radio"
"TheRADIO. We'll get you talking on a forum about how disappointed you are with us."

[Edit] That was flippant. Truth is with Iain, Jon Holmes and a smattering of some choice parts of Delaney/Conran/Mills, I am finding plenty to enjoy via the listen again facility. During the day I'm still catching JoB most mornings and tuning in 10 minutes early for Jon's wonderful handovers from JHB (ooer missus).

It's hard to know what the bosses thinking was behind the expensive number, can they really be that stupid to think it wouldn't be a problem. Then again Ronnie Irani was in a job for many years despite being universally hated amongst listeners so I suppose it's possible. Though I do wonder if they were making a small fortune from the 'RIIAC' texts that may well have been flooding the station while he was on air. Ideally they should of started with a free number to offset the lack of listeners initially just to help things along. This would of given a better image of the station making it appear lively from the start, therefore getting more people to tune in. Maybe if the listening figures are bad enough for the daytime shows they may well change to either a free of cheap number.

I listen to talkRADIO myself more via their Listen Again facility than live, there are still shows I have not even heard yet but from what I have I rate I. Lee, Julia Hartley-Brewer, Alexis Conran, Jonny & Ash Gould and the best of the 2 Mikes [even though it's total bullocks] I still can't make my mind up about the Howard Hughes show some of the subjects take a bit of believing but I'll keep on listening to see how it goes. [I do really rate HH though he's really good]

It doesn't mean that. How would they know if they were encouraging conversation between the general public? If two people are listening to a show together, they have no idea how the two listeners are reacting unless the listeners contact the station or go on social media to communicate their reaction, which most people are unlikely to do.

If they are giving out the number when they don't want calls, given the sort of number it is, Ofcom should do something about that. I might contact them next week to raise this issue. Somebody posted just how much people could be spending on calling the station earlier in this thread. If people are spending that amount of money and not getting on air when they have valid contributions, that is a scandal that should destroy the venture.

I do enjoy listening to Howard Hughes when it's a subject i'm very much into. Don't ask my why but I've always been fascinated by things science can't explain such as ufo's, I am well aware 99.9% of what is talked about is a load of bull. I suppose in a way I find it entertaining almost in a freak show way can't help but laugh at some of the crap these people come out with. Usually the guest he is interviewing will have a book or something to plug so you can clearly see the real motivation behind what they are saying.

The whole 'We'll get you talking' is their strap line it's fairly generic and can be interpreted in several ways. It could well mean a listener hears something being discussed and later on they bring it up in a conversation. In all honesty I didn't really think they meant we'll get you calling the show and talking to the presenter.

If they are plugging a premium rate number knowing they are just going to keep someone on the line, then not put them through to the show they would certainly be breaking OFCOM rules. It could be classed as fraudulent they would be gaining money through deception.

I know the 2 Mikes are not everyone's cup of tea I only got back to liking them myself through a lack of anything else worth listening to late at night before talkRADIO came along but I do still enjoy the Friday quizzes.

In this one Parry breaks his record and I won't say anything further you'll have to listen to it to find out. [it's worth listening to if only to hear Porky squealing like a pig trying to gerrymander his answers]

The 2 Mikes Porky Quiz.

The American Civil War.

You have got to be joking! If Howard Hughes is browsing this thread I'd make one very definite plea - DO NOT ever even entertain the idea of having Derek Acorah on the Unexplained under any circumstances. If there is so much as one misguided individual out there who genuinely believes him and his "Sam the spirit guide" drivel then I'd suggest a visit to a mental health unit promptly. Fit for trashy entertainment purposes only, but when you hear vulnerable people, some bereaved, call in like they did with James Whale and be exploited by such individuals then it crosses the line for me.

You mention Americans. This is one aspect I do take issue with the Unexplained and the podcasts over. There is a very heavy slant of American guests. Why is it that so much of this kind of stuff originates from the United States and rarely from the vast majority of the rest of the world?

Just because I listen to the Unexplained and enjoy most of it doesn't mean I am a conspiracy theorist or believe most of what I hear, I'm not and I don't. Did we go to the moon? Yes, of course we did so six times. Did alien's land at Roswell in July 1947? I rather doubt it, despite some seemingly compelling shows that have guests who attempt to present a good case. Is that really a face on Mars? Absolutely not. Poltergeist? Don't believe it, and so on.

What I am is a critical thinker and sceptic. But that's not the same as a conspiracy theorist. I listen to a great weekly podcast from the United States by a quite eminent panel of people that has been going for the past 11 years called The Skeptics Guide To The Universe. Each lasts about 90 minutes, and they are seriously worth a listen. They are available for free off iTunes. Brian Dunning's weekly Skeptoid podcast is a good listen too, and is just about 15 minutes each time. He has hundreds on iTunes from recent years and has attempted to totally rebut such things as Roswell and also the Rendelsham Forest army base UFO at Christmas 1980 and so much more - he reckoned the "UFO" was a nearby lighthouse along the coast! Fans of Howard's Unexplained might like to check them out.

I don't think there is anything sinister with the number being given out. I'd bet that people just aren't ringing in except to Iain's show. if I was a presenter I'd be pretty p**ed off at the lack of promotion the station has received. It was always going to be a hard sell with the station only being on DAB (and not even to the whole country) and online. I'm not any kind of expert on promotion campagnes but to me, it should have been pushed and promoted as much as possible. It would cost in the short term but if it attracted a few more listeners who'd ring in, then they'd make money back on that bloody expensive number. I'd be more inclined to ring in if I wasn't being charged for waiting before someone even picks up the call! JHB is a decent listen but she sounds desperate for some kind of interaction at times. must feel like they are talking to themselves.

Full page national newspaper ads, billboards on the side of buses and cross promotion on TalkSport (has there been much on the fellow station?) would surely have made sense, even if it cost a bit at first. How much does a full page national paper advert cost roughly? I've previously and rather cheekily suggested they should have bought advertising on LBC to promote themselves even.

The brutal fact is that if I was not a member and reader here on the DS website and forums then I believe I would have absolutely no idea that the station even exists!

I know you won't know because like me we don't bother much with talkSPORT these days but I wonder if there's been any mention at all of talkRADIO on there?. We know some talkRADIO presenters have mentioned them but I would bet talkSPORT have kept completely stum the other way around.

Even when Iain Lee phoned them up with that prank for a bit of late night fun they never mentioned who the caller was and that it was talkRADIO.

Agree with you Rich on the advertising it badly needs some, [it's needs a lot] adverts across the commercial radio stations, like you say in the newspapers, on the sides of buses, on large billboards and maybe if they can stretch to it even a couple or three short sharp quick commercials on TV it'd pay them back in time and more.

Speaking for myself I only found out that talkRADIO was coming back through having a nose at talkSHITE sorry I mean talkSPORT's audience figures. When I searched for 'talksport' on the media.info the results came up and noticed also listed in the same style as talkSPORT was talkSPORT 2, talkBUSINESS and talkRADIO!! Ah I thought very interesting so I researched and bit by bit found out more information about the starting date and presenters etc. If I was not internet savvy I would not of had a clue about it's existence either! I do not visit the talkSPORT website ever so would not of seen the banner at the top promoting the new stations. It is absolutely dumbfounding they started this venture with virtually no national advertising just hoping cross promotion would be enough. If you are right about there being no on air adverts on talkSPORT plugging talkRADIO that is truly unbelievable how can the bosses be that stupid. This means the only methods employed are cross promotion via the websites, word of mouth and through online forums, social media etc. The cross promotion method is not ideal because talkSPORT and talkRADIO are different styles and the sport lovers may well not give a toss about anything else. A lot of the original listeners who tuned out would not be bothering with talkSPORT at all so they wouldn't hear or see any advertising for talkRADIO. The whole phone number thing is bullshit, I worked out to have a free phone would probably just cost them them roughly £50,000 a year. Which is small change compared to the pay packets of the new back room staff who have been taken on since the station was launched. With regard to achieving a respectable public awareness of the station, various methods should be used: online, newspaper, billboards, radio and TV. This would effectively inform a healthy percentage of the UK public about the station and kick start the whole proceedings. Ideally the advertising campaign should be a combined one for both talkRADIO and Virgin Radio, they could share the same space using 2 halves. Have a strap line like 'great talk... great music' or 'talk with attitude... music with attitude' you get the idea. That way they would be promoting both stations at the same cost.

I wonder whether significant advertising has been delayed until the saturation promotion of Virgin is over? I'm no advertising expert but maybe it would be unwise to advertise both stations at the same time?

Someone phoned up last night saying that he discovered the station after seeing one of the big billboards with George Galloway on it.

I was hoping Mike Graham would resurrect his old non-sports show he used to do on TS before it became a 24 hour a day football station, but alas not, it's just the existing show they simulcast with talkSPORT which has Mike Parry waffling & mispronouncing everything!

Yep I'd be for that too, before talkSPORT went all sport, [I'm sorry I meant before they went all the top six of the English Premier League] Mike Graham was my favourite talkSPORT presenter doing the overnight show by himself.
Yes it was half filled with oddballs and fruitbats but I enjoyed it, for me they could just bring in Mr Parry for the Fridays 10 minute Porky Quiz and have Mike similcasted solo across both stations too.
