Of course lack of AM/FM is a bit of a handicap. But digital listening is now around half of all listening and will probably continue to increase its proportion so as time passes it will be less of an issue. Some digital only stations already get an audience of more than a million. Talk Radio was meant to launch originally in 2008 when digital listening was less established. Starting a new national network on AM would probably not work very well today as AM listening is falling fast and running powerful AM transmitters is expensive compared to sharing a low-cost multiplex.

If they phone people back, then they're making very little (if any) money from their phone number. I don't understand why they wouldn't use an 01/02/03 number, doesn't make any sense. When they're getting started, you really want to reduce barriers to participation as much as possible (much like Virgin having a WhatsApp number).

You start paying as soon as you are connected so if the producer is busy answering other calls then you could be on hold for a while before the producer is able to talk to you. When Iain did his prank call to talkSPORT (which has a more expensive phone number) he was on hold for some time before being answered but the producer offered to phone him back because it was busy. So if the lines are busy then the company will make a bit of money from calls, but if they have enough calls then the station and most listeners won't care. If the lines are not busy then calls should be answered quickly and so the caller won't be so out of pocket.

Is that show really a threat to Nick Abbot on a Saturday ? Much as I am glad of Talk radio's return, Saturday is Nick Abbot, Sunday I have yet to fill as Howard Hughes show is tedious for me.
Iain Lee is the only show I listen to mainly.

It depends what Nick is talking about. If it's anything to do with Europe and the referendum as the last 2-3 months have been I tend to change station.

Give it a few months and Howard Hughes should be gone hopefully. There just isn't enough to fill a 3 hour show every week. I wonder what the topics will be tonight

At least she came on at the end! From what I could make out, all she was describing were dreams in her sleep.

He had perhaps his best show so far tonight. I listened to all 3 hours and it just about kept my interest, although I was raising my eyebrows on the home strait with that Scottish Alyson who he spoke with. The trouble with Howard is that he's so polite that instead of telling her he thought she may have a few issues and wasn't quite all there and maybe needed a "check up from the neck up" (loved that turn of phrase) he hid behind saying that many of his listeners or emailers would get in touch to say so about her. I think those were his own thoughts. I think he'd have to be pretty desperate to get her back on again, even though she sounded lovely enough.

I've heard Gary Heseltine the former police officer and also Stanton Friedman on his podcasts before. Gary Heseltine seems to speak, as he did tonight, quite a lot without really saying much of any real substance and it is really the same kind of UFO stuff we could have heard on any radio show in the past 50 years. Stanton Friedman was a decent listen and is the type of guest that Howard should concentrate on, rather than emailers he has done little research on and goes with a hunch to put them to air.

I namedropped both Roswell and Rendelsham a couple of days ago and they both got a mention tonight. Those two just never seem to go away, and I'm convinced by neither very much. It's no coincidence that these things appear near air bases. Why doesn't a UFO craft descend onto a packed beach in Ibiza, Benidorm or Bournemouth at the height of the summer season or something similar?

Having said that, even if there have been 10,000,000 reports of UFO's worldwide and 9,999,999 are fake or explained fully, that still leaves just the 1, and just the 1 is all it takes to be a remarkable thing.

Interestingly there were no actual phoned in callers tonight and none were asked for either.

I've just been looking at call prices at it appears that some providers don't seem to have yet implemented the access charge/service charge system. Sounds hard to believe but

http://www.saynoto0870.com/calls.php

have created this table of optimal call charges and they tend to know what they are talking about.

So if that's the case then using 1899.com

a 1 minute call to talkRADIO would be 12p
a 2 minute call to talkRADIO would be 19p
a 10 minute call to talkRADIO would be 75p

The 1899 service can also be used from mobiles where the access charge is particularly expensive.

The same seems to apply to Skype, but their rates are higher.

Am I missing something here?

"but instead the dizzying heights of the 1 'till 4 pm on a talk radio station that no one really knows exists, outside of the people that work here and a handful of anoraks on Digital Spy"

Fame at last!

I'm actually slightly worried Jon (And Iain after Friday) have had enough of the absolute technical shambles that is talkradio.

I thought the talkSPORT number was cheaper than the talkRADIO one.

But yes you're paying from the second you're connected and you then end up on hold until the producer gets to you. Depending on how busy they are it can take a while.

I didn't hear all of Iain's show on Friday - what fell to pieces this time?

He had the random ranty caller, then the last half hour he had all sorts of problems with the phone system randomly not putting lines to air - just silence. Happens a lot.

I love both Iain and Jons show, but they're both sounding increasingly pissed off in my opinion.

talkSPORT have an 0871 number costing 13p per minute plus access charge compared to 7p per minute plus access charge on talkRADIO.

BTW, can you still get into the Facebook group? Soon after I liked your post, I could no longer get in.

It's inexcusable really. Who are they employing behind the scenes on this station? students? Fair enough if you have problems during the first week but by now things should be running smoothly

Oh dear, oh dear! Insulting listeners like that is a very poor move. At least those who comment on here are actually tuning in and in some cases spreading the word that the thing exists. I'm able to listen in daytime today if I want. I'm not doing so though. I always prefer speech radio late at night, but had been tempted to dip into this 1pm to 4pm slot. Now I see that the host is belittling people on here I will not be doing so, now or in the future. Clever move.

TalkRadio is just late night Iain Lee and Howard Hughes for me, and will remain so.

You need a sense of humour to appreciate Jon's show, so I doubt you would have liked it anyway. No great loss for Jon.

3 in a row

If you post in this forum, you're an anorak. I don't find it offensive in the slightest, especially not in the tongue in cheek way the show is presented!

I agree, at the start i think they let it slip with it being a new station but the issues keep happening and nothing seems to be getting done. Not enough to quit or anything however i can see something being said on air that may cause them to get a talking to.

I just looked at Cornelius' Twitter

https://twitter.com/ConMend/with_replies
https://twitter.com/ConMend/status/722096895523471360

and it looks like he originally asked Alexandra Tilling

https://thewinemonkeys.com/about/

to talk about the shortage of Prosecco in middle England

but she wasn't available so the "School of Booze"

http://www.school-of-booze.com/who-w...yton-biography

was second (or subsequent) choice.

Cornelius' CV is here:

http://corneliusmendez.wix.com/conmend

He doesn't mention anything about his mum teaching him to French kiss, or getting off with a girl from Heart's street team.
