no. he's taking over Friday 7-10 PM.
Thanks for clearing that up. Sounds like a good slot for him once a week. I don't know much about GG but I did listen to him a few years ago on LBC when he did a late night slot and found him quite entertaining. I'm looking forward to it, hopefully it will be a lively show.

reckon George will hoover up the Sat 6-9 slot as well as the Friday slot and good luck to him-- he'll generate more callers and, IMO more interest than Jonny and ash who are a decent enough listen but IMO nothing particularly special.

Is Howard's guest drunk? She keeps stumbling over the words magnetic and magnetism, slurring her words and giggling.

It did sound like she was quite relaxed. I thought she was joking when they were talking about wine; I guess not.

I think Heather was 'ticking', to put it politely! But it sounded like Howard also knew what she was like. He referred to wine a couple of times. Otherwise, I'm enjoying the show so far tonight.

I dont tend to catch the live show but the podcast is great, big fan of Kath's and was so chuffed she left 3CR to join Iain as they have great chemistry.

Noticeable growth for the evening show.

JHB isn't getting more callers than she was. Somebody got disconnected when they called in according to a tweet I saw a few days ago.

There is interaction with the afternoon show.

I don't listen to drive except to part of Friday's show, and I don't listen to breakfast so I don't know what the situation is on those shows.

People are still discovering the station so there may be a gradual increase in the number of listeners.

I wonder if there will be more calls today with it being a bank holiday?

Always enjoy hearing Heather Couper talking about space and astronomy issues. Howard's spoken to her before. It was just a shame that the conversation was not a lot longer, because Heather is a very engaging and informed person. After Howard was flagging up the loss of the magnetosphere for a couple of hours a few days ago I was seriously disappointed in the mundane explanation of a computer problem. I was genuinely excited for a few moments beforehand.

I thought the show was pretty decent tonight even if it did revisit hoary old chestnuts like Rendelsham Forest and 9/11. The numerologist from Australia was a waste of time though. All those listeners birthdates from 1971 were amusing, but as if there was any meaning to any of it. The only genuine numerology that works and affects the future of anyone's life is if you pick all the winning lottery jackpot numbers!

More podcast recommendations from 2012/13 are on the way in a day or two Martyn.

Ass Prod Cass is playing a major role on Jake Yapp's show today (he's sitting in for Jon today). She even introduced herself as "Ass Prod" despite not apparently liking that title on past shows. Jake is doing the odd haiku (read by Rudd instead of Cornelius) and has the diversity review, albeit reviewing other stuff than newspapers. He's mostly doing his own stuff, however, including repeating his soap opera sketches from his weekend show. He also invited calls but sounded like he didn't expect any and I didn't hear any in the first two hours.

GG has been expressing support for Ken Livingstone's claims. If he doess that onTalkRadio and the station gets negative coverage I wonder how the management will react?

I've really enjoyed Jake Yapp this afternoon. The comedy seems much more topical and observational than with Jon Holmes, and I like the sketches too.

George Galloway is always controversial, I used to enjoy listening to The Mother of all Talk Shows years ago. Much more entertaining than the one-size-fits-all, bland presenters that 5live usually offers up these days.

Honestly? I think TalkRadio are banking on George drumming up some much-needed publicity when he inevitably says something controversial. Everyone knows what George is like, so I don't think it would necessarily reflect poorly on the station as a whole. I could be wrong, but, I think any publicity would be good publicity for TalkRadio right now.

Hi Rich. Where was Howard flagging this up a few days ago mate? I couldn't find him on Twitter.

I don't mind the hoary old chestnuts you mention to be honest as I'm new to all this this sort of thing, but I see your point. Perhaps Howard is trying to appeal to a more mainstream audience? I did enjoy the show last night. Touch wood, I think it's going well for Howard.

Thanks for any forthcoming podcast recommendations. I managed to listen to a couple earlier today. No hurry mate, just whenever you have time.

One thing I did want to ask you Rich is if you listen to any other podcasts of a similar nature? I'd be interested in both Howard Hughes type stuff and also sceptic stuff as well?

Surely they must know what he's capable of before they hired him.

Emotional beginning to drive with Yasmeen Khan's personal story. The end was very sad. Yasmeen Khan deserves credit for not naming the insensitive doctor.

You mis-read the line I wrote. When I said he "was flagging up the loss of the magnetoshere a few days ago" I meant that was when the story happened (23rd April) not that Howard has previously mentioned it, as it was the first time I'd even heard about it on the Unexplained last night.

Regards other similar podcasts, I think I already mentioned both Skeptoid with Brian Dunning, which generally is 12 minutes per week and also The Skeptics Guide To The Universe, normally about 1 hour 25 minutes per week on here previously. Neither are especially like the Unexplained but they do feature plenty of critical thinking, which is something Howard could go stronger on in his show at times but I suppose he prefers not to openly antagonise his guests and get a reputation that would keep people away from his podcasts and his show.

Pardon me for poking my nose in but I'm a bit of a nerd for skeptical/science podcasts. I have two recommendations.

Firstly; Skeptics With a K - based in Merseyside and very often they cover mediums, homeopathy, alternative medicine and the like.

Secondly; The Wow Signal Podcast, which is all about the SETI project and related areas of astronomy/astrobiology - from a purely scientific viewpoint. This one is infuriatingly infrequent though.

I can't speak for any shows similar to Howard's I'm afraid. I have tried his show and many other 'Coast to Coast' type pods on numerous occasions and find it very hard to tolerate the bullshine.

re george Galloway supporting Ken. why would TR care? LBC sem to revel in the Ken story as he's one of their own presenters so I'm sure if they are happy to continue giving Ken air time, TR are going to be fine with giving someone who has only expressed support for Ken air time. Also, as others have said, if you employ George, you know what you are getting and, I think TR are at the stage at the mo where any kind of publicity is good publicity... at least someone will be talking about them for another reason than Iain Lee.

Yasmeen Khan was on the Diversity Paper Review today and seemed to think that Iain Lee had also called himself Head of Music in competition with Jon, but I don't recall Iain making such a proclamation. She seemed to be familiar with recent Twitter activity and/or listened to recent shows as she called him Iain "massive racist" Lee.

The word "cornershop" is now apparently racist according to the BBC, as a word Iain Lee used in an apparent answer (citing the name of a group who topped the charts in 1998) on the quiz Pointless. Have I heard this barmy story correctly?

Don't think it was the BBC who said it was racist.
A few idiots on Twitter took offence and some half-arsed hack "journalist" picked up on these comments and ran it as "news".
All blown out of proportion.
