You can taste difference in concentration and ripeness. You just need to work harder with cheap ones. Bit or Worcester to up the umami. Salt, sugar maybe a touch of a deeper vinegar like sherry. Tiniest bit of star anise works wonders too.

I used to buy the tinned whole plum tomatoes........they were really nice
So nice that you could just warm a couple up and have them with cheese on toast For curries and stews etc I would just get the cheapo chopped tomatoes.......basically you're buying a basis for sauce not tomatoes ! I haven't bought tinned tomatoes for years now though.........I started buying fresh ones. |

Since Tesco stopped selling 'Flavortop' ones years ago I haven't found any full-size tomatoes which taste of anything at all.

Thanks for the replies, yes they always end up in stews and curries.
Think i'll be sticking the value ranges then.

Buy cartons and avoid tin poisoning. Those in the know avoid all tinned foods and are healthier for it.

Oh tinnéd tomatoes - how I adore thee!
Seriously they are one of my storecupboard essentials - you can usually lob them into most sauces, curries, stew, casserole, pie etc, or delicious on toast or in fried breakfast. I buy M&S ones or Napolina (which are often on offer) |

Cheap ones are OK if they are part of a highly flavoured meat dish like chilli con carne, curry or lasagne, etc. But I like to have some better quality ones in the cupboard for when the tomatoes are taking a front seat, as it were.
For instance, last week I used up a head of celery that had lost its crunch by chopping it up, softening it in olive oil with plenty of garlic, some anchovy then adding a tin of Cirio tomatoes and cooking it down until thick. It was lovely as a side dish, both hot and at room temp the next day. I don't think it would have been as nice with watery cheapo tomatoes.Cirio tomatoes are usually on offer in one of the main supermarkets at any time, so not that much more expensive. |

I used to buy the value ones until I tried cirio chopped tomatoes. I find them to be way superior to the other brands and I only use half a tin instead of a full tin of cheap ones.

Really good for curries, vege chlli and vege stews and casseroles. |

Value plum does the job - always the whole ones though, never chopped (telly chefs say they are better and I have to agree). Just squish with hands and into the pot. Very satisfying is that!

You really are part of the old way of thinking aren't you, and a tad bit childish with your response. Don't let people who choose to avoid putting crap in their bodies get under your skin so much. Your welcome to put what you like in your body, but it's all about balance. I don't turn my nose up at tinned offerings if eating out, but we do like to choose fresh and non tinned food when shopping.
i know, I'm teasing. Keep at it

Mmmm tinned tomatoes on toast with lots of pepper.... One of my student staples during uni years. Napolina is my fave brand these days but as student, the cheaper the better - still loved them!

Cirio tomatoes are the best, I always look for offers on those.
Cheapo ones are okay if using in curries or stews, but on toast it has to be Cirio. |
