When I switched to Infinity BT Sports was free, then they came up with BT Lite and I switched to that, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I don't watch sports but they said it was free so I downgraded.

Up until the last couple of bills I have had it completely discounted, now I'm being charged £20.25 per three month bill.

Can anyone explain the mess that is BT Sports to me, just spoke to one of their online people to get some answers and my money back only to end up being given a phone number to ring - they don't make it easy

No reply to my general complaint when I finally managed to find the email form. What's the point of the Internet if all they do is tell you to ring them so they can give you the hard sell, I hate speaking to people on the phone.

I have a sneaky suspicion they knew they would start charging and that's why they left it at BT Lite.

On my current bill beneath the discount it says Only for BT Broadband Customers

In a previous bill it says BT Sport Broadband dependent discount For BT Broadband customers

Another says Broadband in contract loyalty discount

I am confused.

Just had a look at my latest bill and it shows

Has your broadband contract ceased. You may be out of your fixed 12/18 month
contract and now on a rolling contract. You should have received a phone call or e-mail from them if your broadband contract was due to expire. I say should because one of my free add on options expired and I didn't know until the charge popped up because I didn't get the reminder from BT.

Pretty sure to get BT Sport Lite free you have to be in contract, once your 12 months is over they start charging you for it unless you renew your contract for another 12 months. Gone are the days that BT roll your contract over now, they probably don't bother with reminders any more either because you are out of contract and not agreeing to any new terms as you will be able to cancel without penalty.

I recon dearmrman has it spot on, you are out of minimum term for broadband, BT Sport is only 'free' if you are within the original minimum term or agree to a new minimum term (in other words you renew for a further 12 months) if your minimum term expires you move onto a standard 30 days notice but you no longer get BT Sport for free
Your choices are to cancel BT Sport completely , but the onus is on you to contact them, or re contract for a new minimum term (12 months) and get sport lite 'for free' , or move to another provider, I dare say if you recontract they may credit you with the fee you have paid for BTSport
They normally contact you as you approach the end of the minimum term to try and persuade you to re contract

18 month contract for our Infinity, pretty sure I am still within it. I found a special page for dealing with this mess, it must be a mess as the regulator ruled on it and they have a special link for dealing with BT Sports complaints.

They are going to cancel it but no mention of paying back the money they took. I told them when they changed it to a paying service I did not want it.

It still says BT Lite is free on 'My BT' under the changes to BT Sports.

Its done to trap older customers with an aging demographic its good business to set up a system that can exploit older people "forgetting".

Only BT Sport 1 is included in BT Sport Lite.

It possibly still is....when does your billing period start? on a 3 month bill BT charge 3 months in advance..so it is quite possible you are still in the free period for a short length of time.

You're right, was sure they had two channels originally after the change.

Every three months, looks like they have credited me some money but I'm not sure if that's repayment for what they sneakily took or just the reduction of not having BT Sport Lite for the next bill.

I had a billing error last year when their systems got mixed up between 12 month and 18 month contracts, they thought I was out of contract after 12 months but it was 18 months.

However, I didn't notice the error for 2 or 3 months and by then, they had automatically corrected it retrospectively (but they still had my money for 2 months!). My guess is that something similar happened in your case too and they will eventually sort it out automatically if you leave it for a couple of months. Otherwise, it may take you a lot more wasted time getting through to someone who can fix it!

They have a similar crazy setup with line rental saver, though they do at least warn you about this one. You can renew up to a month in advance but they start charging you monthly at the full rate before that month is up, which they refund a konth later (if you renewed line rental). So in the month I pay the annual saver rental, I always have a monthly rental charged as well, which gets refunded. This is sharp practice IMO because it is a cash flow benefit for them and probably a major one, and they are getting that with my money.

And everyone elses. Obviously they won't fix it unless OFCOM force them to as it must be very profitable to them.

I’m sorry you have been charged for BT Sport Lite. I can see you sent us an email at the beginning of August advising that you wished to cancel BT Sport Lite as you were coming to the end of your contract. An email reply was sent to you advising that if you re-contracted your Infinity you could continue to have the BT Sport Lite free of charge. The BT Sport Lite remained on the account.

I placed an order yesterday to cease this off. I have also applied a credit of £30.15 to refund the BT Sport charges up to yesterday. The remainder of the charge will be refunded automatically on the order. You will see these credits on your next bill.

Well that's all settled nicely. Still don't understand why I was charged though unless as the above poster said they messed up the 12/18 month contracts.
