I didn't even know that the iOS calendar did this!
I put in my own email address and I did recieve the mail.
Does your wife's phone have email setup? Has yours?

Are you using iCloud as the calendar/email system, or Google or some other setup?
If you open up Reminders and create a new list, name it and add your wife to the sharing list.
Then open the calendar and open the event then select calendar below it, then put a tick on the tab which you named which will share it with whoever you've added to the sharing list.
Or if you have family sharing set up, just select the Family tab.

Actually forget Reminders, you should be able to do it from within the calendar app by selecting calendars and then adding the sharing options.

'default' only if you choose to during the first run screens. I've never used icloud for mail or calendar, always connect to my work and gmail and yahoo accounts. But then my first iPhone pre-dates iCloud and I never bought .Mac
