Acting is not easy, it is a craft.

Tonight Danny Miller who plays Aaron in Emmerdale showed us just how important that craft is - sublime, heartbreaking, emotionally gut wrenching acting. It was real and emotive.

Half an hour later we witness Antony Cotton in Corrie who has spent the last 13 years playing himself without an ounce of talent.

This is where the Art of Acting separates the likes of Miller and Cotton- Danny Miller has the talent to carry off a hard hitting storyline but Cotton and others like him fail to make the grade yet are kept on their shows year after year despite offering nothing to the audience.

Anthony Cotton/Sean is very well liked outside DS so to say he offers nothing to the audience is a little bit daft as quite clearly he does, just not to the audience on here.

That's a bit rough I think, I don't usually watch but was a regular viewer about 10 yrs ago, I have been trying to get back into it recently because I have more time on my hands, so I have no great sentimental ties to the newer characters but I did think that Danny did an exceptional job on a tough subject matter tonight. In general there are usually far more EE threads on everything than the other three mainstream soap.

People just accept Antony Cotton playing himself. He's very popular outside these forums.

Cotton must be the luckiest man on television!

It's all a matter of opinion, like what is good music and what isn't.

How many Danny Miller fanw**k threads do we need?

It's going to get worse before it gets better.

I think all actors are lucky considering what a tough industry it is. Miller is considered by many to be an acting giant, yet he came back to ED rather than take any more risks.

But like all professions the 'best' are those who have a natural talent but couple that with training / hard work and the willingness to take risks.

He is certainly not alone in that respect there are quite a few others which also include women too.

Where did you hear that? I hear that he is a vile character, as well as having zero acting talent.

He must know where the bodies are buried.

The only reason they keep Cotton on Corrie is to stop him hosting another chat show after the last time.

If Kate Oates really means business she should axe the deadwood on Corrie with Cotton at the top of her axe list.

Definitely, along with his dog collared boy friend, another pointless character that brings nothing to the programme.

Get rid of other non actors like Fizz, Chesney and his dopey girl friend and Corrie might become watchable again.

I like Daniel Brocklebank, at least he can act unlike Cotton.

Of course - she can only mean business if she sacks someone based on the opinion of maybe 20 forum users.

Its not just Cotton ,to many actors and actresses just play themselves in all the soaps on the telly. to many to mention. Dev , shayne ward, daniella was daniella in eastenders just like what she is in CBB. It really comes out when they do chat shows . Top notch actors play a character and in real life (if you ever see them or lucky enough to say Hi) have no semblance to their character. I once seen Kit who plays Jon Snow in GOT in a pub here in Belfast and at first didnt even recognise him but he is so different in real life.

Good actors play characters, NOT themselves

Totally agree. There has always been folks who act a character and folks who play a version of themselves. Compare Hilda Ogden (former) with Dot Cotton (latter).

I'd just amend that to say - a good actor can play a character when they are given the opportunity to. Casting looks for a strong similarity between an actor and a character and unless an actor is bringing something else, i.e. kudos then they will be cast to type. Its just the way is works

Even the worst actors have their fans, I know that the awful Cotton has a couple of defenders in here, but I have never met anyone who has ever thought that he was an asset to the show.

Really? Tell that to people like James Norton. I can barely equate his characters in Happy Valley, Grantchester and War & Peace, so totally different are they all, (and none of whom appear to bear any similarity at all to the actor).

Like any other profession, actors need a modicum of talent and then training, training, training. (Only a very rare few have an actual gift which sets them apart from the jobbers). Where so many soap actors fall down is in the lack of formal training.
