Rough idea but not 100% certain I'd be exact.

Just off the coast, approx 40 miles south of Newcastle.

Yes.

I could also point out Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Norwich, Bristol, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leicester Plynouth (and Counties they are in) etc, etc, etc.

Also the main cities in most of Europe, Australia and America.

And I didn't even take Geography O level. Stopped it in the 3rd form, just taking History and RE as my Humanities so I don't want to hear any of this crap about you needing to take subjects to a high level in School.

I was quite impressed that Steph hit Essex though i suspect she was aiming for London and just got lucky. I very much doubt she'd actually know it is North East of the Capital.

Yes and so can my 7 year old daughter. She learned from watching the weather in the mornings and asking!

Why is this even important?

Of course.

Could you draw a map of the UK? How much would you be able to fill in with cities, motorways and whatever you know? How accurately could you draw an outline of Great Britain, even? It's not easy. Have a quick try then compare your map with Google Maps.

Maybe you didn't need to belittle people who can't point to where they live when posing it. I can't read a map, I have a vague idea where my location is, but I've been geographically challenged all my life. I get lost everywhere I go with almost no sense of direction and no ability to properly follow a map.

I certainly couldn't tell you where the Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland, etc. was on an empty map with no names.

A general question as to whether most people do or not and from there, whether Stephanie is very thick (or uneducated), not to be able to immediately pick out her home town.

Well I'm shit at drawing and the UK is quite fiddly with all of its bulges, inlets etc but if it was allowed to be a sort of triangular blob, i think i'd be able to have a pretty good stab at the major cities, M1, M6, A1, M25, M4, M3. M6e etc

Fair enough, some people aren't any good at that same as some people are crap at Maths or even dyslexic.

I don't think anybody is saying it automatically equals a lack of intelligence.

It just interesting to learn whether it is considered a 'standard' thing to know and be able to do.

True.

I'd never even thought of that but besides needing to know when driving etc, it is there several times a day on National TV. If you look at a Weather forecast, they show the map and move through the Country, highlighting it and generally have names of cities with temps so it just goes in for most people without having to be actively taught.

There are a lot of places i might not know specifically but i could probably say if it were North West, North east, middle, South west, near the coast etc.

You realise I didn't post the thread I assume

Not seen any evidence of either the OP or any reply, which was designed to belittle anybody. Sometimes a question is just a question..and any 'offence' or sense of being belittled is assumed by you ?

So what if you can't read a map - plenty of things each of us are crap at if you look close enough. It was just a topic the OP chose to ask about.

Stand down and breathe

They should be. It's not like not knowing the 4th wife of Henry the 8th or getting stuck on a multiplication maths question.

How does someone not know where they live? Surely after a lifetime of watching the weather on TV their interest would have been piqued at least once to find out which bit relates to the place where they live? It's absolutely astonishing.

If this isn't classed as a lack of intelligence then what would be? Not knowing how to spell your own name? Forgetting how to blink? Thinking Star Wars is real?

Being an adult and living in a country and being completely unaware of where it is you live is as close to 'unintelligent' as you can get.

No apologies necessary. As you said you didn't create the thread I'm just lashing out.

Next time round, you and me have a flouncey competition to see who can lash out the best. I don't care if I win or lose btw

Take Care, be easy on yourself - and Hey - we still got a winner to argue over yet

When Steph watches the forecast she always blames the Met Office for being wrong because while the sun is actually shining in Porthmadog, it is cats and dogs in Liverpool.

While some people have difficulty reading maps to not be able to identify to within nearly a 100Km the location of her hometown Liverpool I would suggest is more than being map blind. Liverpool, the Mersey and the Wirral must be one of the easiest parts of the country to locate If she was trying for say Leeds or Birmingham, a vague prod in the middle of the UK might be a little more understandable.

I couldn't do that and I got an a for a level geography a level.

Geography isn't about pointing out places on a map!
