If it's not about Steph, then it's not important.. Stephs world revolves around Steph.. Self absorbed..

It kind of still is a key element..like learning to walk before you run. Even the verbose guff from the DoE regarding curriculum kinda sets it out - or at at least as clearly as any 'dot gov' website clears things up

And this is Key Stage 1

Quote:
“Pupils should develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality.
They should understand basic subject
-
specific vocabulary relating to human and physical
geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first
-
hand observation, to
enhance their locational awareness
”

And then onto Key Stage 2

Quote:
“name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and
their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features
(including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land
”

Geography does not end at geographical awareness - but it certainly starts with it

It wasn't 20 years ago.

Knowing where penfldgdorbsiebr in wales and being able to point it out isn't that useful. Where as knowing what an ox bow lake is is.

I guess regional curriculums vs time vary across the UK. It was 35 years ago for me..in a boys school, upon the sunny resort of Costa-del-Peckham. I only done the subject for the first 3 years, before taking 'options' for 'O' Levels to pursue.

Even at that stage - not following it through as a course to complete - we were mullered with learning the difference between London and the Moon..

of course I can

I found it shocking that she could not only place her home town on the map, but she couldn't even choose her own country correctly

Yes, of course. And I don't live in one of the major cities in the UK.

Quick thread hijack simple question..seeing as this involves a lack of knowledge

I see the term SOTS seperate in posts to BOTS...What the hell is it..? Seriously

The Google results were comical but non-informative : - s

I'm guessing I'll do a face palm when I know the answer.

No I can't.

I'd be in the general vicinity... But no I can't quite get it... Or any major cities, even the capital. I have a real blind spot for things like this.

So when you watch the weather is it just like when someone tries to explain algorithms to a cat?

Just...no idea what's going on.

I don't watch the weather it's 2016, come on! Type the name of where you live into Google along with the word weather and you can get your forecast... No silly maps required!

I bet you ace it with Prof W M Davis on the life cycle of rivers or Malthusian theory of population though.

Thanks for that.. I've been asking in a few threads myself, before discovering the answer..an answer so simple I suppose, you just kind of skirt past it as an option..d'oh

Yes I can, and quite a lot of other places in the UK too.

I'm pretty sure I could point out any settlement in England and Wales with a population over 20,000 on a map. Scotland & NI would be a lot more hit and miss.

So a question is asked..and people reply. We are truely odious 'smart arses' if daring to admit we know geographic locations. Worse still..we failed to mock people who don't.

I feel like a monster

True. Even before I stopped it, we were covering more things like geology.

It is just that the standard excuse whenever anybody comments on stephanie's seeming lack of knowledge is to blame Schooling, saying "maybe she wasn't interested in such and such a subject" or "stopped taking such and such a subject" - we had it with History the other day. I was making the point that me knowing where places are is not much to do with what I was taught in Geography at School.

That said, as i was saying with basic general knowledge, pretty sure we covered maps, France being next to Britain, where London is, how many continents, Oceans etc in Primary School, before we even started specific Geography lessons at secondary school.

Obviously i started School 40 years ago, and was the last year of O Levels. The curricula changed a lot with the introduction of GCSEs.

Of COURSE I can, and my child could too, from a very early age.

She and I looked at a MAP. And we watched the flamin' WEATHER forecast together, for years, it's on often enough.

snort.
