Same as me. I was in Essex and we seem to be the same sort of age.

Just look at a map of the UK Kt, and find where you live. Look at it a few times, memorize it a bit.

BINGO, you know.

And you won't have to bother being facetious about it EVER again.

Thanks.

I don't quite understand the reactions to people just answering a question?

If oeople have blind soots, fair enough, people have them and as I said earlier, it doesn't mean people are thick. But people just honestly replying whether they could identify places on a map doesn't meant they are boasting/bragging either.

People are different. I'm old school, i orefer to get my News by watching TV and/or reading a Paper. At the end of the News, there is a fairly detailed weather report, including a map, which I watch to find out if i should take a brolly with me the following day. That means i'm used to seeing a map of the UK, and specifically where I am on it in the Local Section.

If i am driving somewhere cross country (which i often do) I orefer to look at a map than rely on a SatNav barking instructions at me. Therefore I get a feel of where it is. I've been doing this ever since i started driving at 17. I drove to Liverpool from Essex just last week for a funeral so not only did i have to follow a map so know where it is, I know where everything along the way (like Birmingham) is.

So a lot of it is from practical experience which some people have, some people don't.

It doesn't make people 'better' - it's just a fact as to what knowledge they have.

I think Liverpool's quite hard to locate on an unlabelled map. -- How far from the right location was Stephanie, anyway? --- I know it's somewhere on that long curve of coast, but I don't remember where. If I had to point to the Wirral, I'd have even less idea, though I take it from your question that it's in much the same place.

There's a subtext to many of the post to the effect that if you can't point to where you live on an unlabelled map, you must be pretty thick, especially if it's a place that's as easily located as Liverpool. And sometimes it's explicit, rather than implied or suggested. For instance, here:

How does someone not know where they live? Surely after a lifetime of watching the weather on TV their interest would have been piqued at least once to find out which bit relates to the place where they live? It's absolutely astonishing.

If this isn't classed as a lack of intelligence then what would be? Not knowing how to spell your own name? Forgetting how to blink? Thinking Star Wars is real?

Being an adult and living in a country and being completely unaware of where it is you live is as close to 'unintelligent' as you can get.”

as I said..she even got the country wrong, she pointed to Porthmadog in Wales....approx 100 miles away.....but I suppose she deserves a peanut for pointing to somewhere that is on the coast at least

I think BB would have accepted 'near enough' but Stephanie pointed to West Wales.

She was about 100 km away in Wales. The Wirral is the oblong shaped peninsula on the other side of the Mersey which to someone coming from that area I would have thought should be a relatively easy spot on an outline map. Maybe she should be forgiven - she is only young!!

As it happens i think that particular post maybe is a little harsh (and for the record I had Henry VIII's wives drummed into me at a young age so could say which was 4th and what happened to her probably more quickly that identifying some places on a Map of the UK- often it is just what you happen to know about) but some of the answers on here (and the History thread last week) seemed to lump everybody that said they could do it in the same 'up themselves, boasting' group when many were just stating a fact, whether they knew or not, not belittling anybody that doesn't

Secondary school in the early 80's was perhaps the tail end of the old ways of teaching. From focusing on the basics of reading and writing, simple math first.. and likewise with topics such as geography or history.

It was also the last era of corporal punishment..and I had my butt and both hands worn to the bone, due to my devout respect for the rules and penchant for treating bunking off as a 'God' given right which I exercised with abandon..and never seemed to tire of weals supposed to correct my laisez-faire attitude to rules that bored me silly..

Not when you're from Liverpool it isn't !............Wirral is on the other side of the River Mersey .

Some parts of Wales are quite close, and there's a Welsh curve of coast that might be mistaken for the right one in a stressful situation. Looks like I'll have to watch it. ...

Ok, done that.

Those who say she pointed to Porthmadog are approximately right. (She was pointing further inland, though, so more Snowdonia National Park.) But that is on the other curve of coast I mentioned, and she clearly was getting stressed and flustered. When she first started pointing at the map, her pointer was aimed at the right place.

But that post is what most people seem to be thinking; they just don't come right out and say it. That is, they reject the argument that what it shows is a lack of knowledge rather than a lack of intelligence; and they reject it because they think her failure to point to Liverpool was so outrageous an example of ignorance that it must show stupidity.

I think she was just overplaying the simpleton act and deliberately pointed to Wales.

I'm absolutely Shit at Geography ,and dropped it as soon as I could when choosing which 'O' Levels to take ,but yea I could point to where I live on a Map ,more or less ,I could definitely point to my Nearest town ,but don't know if i'd get the exact spot for the Village I live in ,in Cornwall

I could however point to where the Major cities were ,Counties etc

Your not a monster I respect your geographical knowledge... I question your ability to recognise when a post is just a playful bit of silly... But I respect your geographical knowledge!

Oh Lordy lord! I've read the rest of the thread now and I think my comment might be the only one that's made people cross!

Just to be clear... I don't really think people reckon they're clever because they can read maps!!! I was trying to be silly!

Oh heck.

This is twice I've done this, this series. I keep reading posts in a cheerful tone by accident I think! It was obviously more serious a discussion than I thought!!

Sorry all X

Ah well that's the problem. You've got a well deserved reputation of having something of a fantastic mind, and succinct way with words - that bypasses some of us lesser mortals on occasion. So make allowances for us poor plebs not necessarily getting your drift immediately.

We are trying...People assure me I'm very trying regularly. But endeavour to catch up we will

It's just chat and fun at the end of the day...God, the crap that happens out there for real in life - we need our own entertainment and revolving 'roles' or we'd die of boredom...

Well i can only speak for myself as I don( personally know any of the other posters but it is certainly not what I really think. I apologise if that is how it came across but rereading, I don't see it. I was discussing me, not casting aspersions or being nasty about others, implicitly or explicitly.
