Just to be clear... I don't really think people reckon they're clever because they can read maps!!! I was trying to be silly!

Oh heck.

This is twice I've done this, this series. I keep reading posts in a cheerful tone by accident I think! It was obviously more serious a discussion than I thought!!

Sorry all X”

Whoopsy - i completely misread it, missing the tongue in cheek.

Sorry.

I don't watch the weather and I'm not great at memorising maps, so I'd probably only get in the general vicinity.

Middlesbrough? or is that too far inland?

If oeople have blind soots, fair enough, people have them and as I said earlier, it doesn't mean people are thick. But people just honestly replying whether they could identify places on a map doesn't meant they are boasting/bragging either.

People are different. I'm old school, i orefer to get my News by watching TV and/or reading a Paper. At the end of the News, there is a fairly detailed weather report, including a map, which I watch to find out if i should take a brolly with me the following day. That means i'm used to seeing a map of the UK, and specifically where I am on it in the Local Section.

If i am driving somewhere cross country (which i often do) I orefer to look at a map than rely on a SatNav barking instructions at me. Therefore I get a feel of where it is. I've been doing this ever since i started driving at 17. I drove to Liverpool from Essex just last week for a funeral so not only did i have to follow a map so know where it is, I know where everything along the way (like Birmingham) is.

So a lot of it is from practical experience which some people have, some people don't.

It doesn't make people 'better' - it's just a fact as to what knowledge they have.”

But they are boasting when the replies are 'obviously' and followed by smug emoticons such as the grinning face or the cat face.

It's obvious that some people here would look down on those with learning difficulties.

Okay, you maybe have a point about people using the term 'obviously'.

I hardly think it is fair to say they would look down on those with diagnosed learning difficulties. That is a whole different area, i very much doubt the OP was intending to include those with learning difficulties in the question.

There is a difference between what some might expect a person without a Learning difficulty to know from Schooling and just living life as basic general knowledge.

Sorry, but that's utter nonsense

People are not allowed to feel momentarily good about themselves for answering a question truthfully now ?

If you take part in a competition, or play a video game, or a board game, or play sport..and you score a point or acheive something in that - then what ? Cast your eyes down lest anyone thinks you believe you are better than them ?

You read too much into things, and come up with conclusions that are based on no facts whatsoever, and probably offensive to many who may have loved ones with learning disabilities..and why ? Because they felt good about themselves for a whole single moment knowing something or the answer to a question.

I could with great ease as I am in a part of Devon that even Stevie Wonder could pick out on a map! However I am from the Midlands originally and if I had to find that City I would just stab in the middle and hope for the best lol

What a ridiculous, conceited thread.

Of course I can find where I live on the map.

Manchester - southern right hand corner

I live on the west coast of America ... and I know where Liverpool is located on the map. It's not at all hard. It's at the northern end of the "bump" that is Wales joins England.

'Of course I can find where I live on the map'

'So when you watch the weather is it just like someone tries to explain algorithms to a cat?'

'To not be able to identify where you live is appalling for a girl of her age'

All of the above comments are evidence.

Trying to be holier than thou is the worst kind of boasting, especially when you use other people's disabilities as a crutch............ Nobody on this thread , apart from you, has even mentioned people with learning difficulties because that is regarded as a given!
Btw I imagine blind people would struggle too !

I could very well have difficulties myself, the point is there were plenty of unsavoury comments that suggested anyone who would struggle to find their location on a map was an idiot.

I rather helpfully typed out the comments for you and others to read.

Yes , Well maybe you're taking a rather light-hearted thread a little too seriously.

Those comments are evidence of nothing

They are interpretations by you

And to clarify, you interpret them as some people looking down their noses at people with learning difficulties..your words, not mine.

No one here has uttered a syllable or sentiment that any reasonable person could deduce would imply that they were 'looking down' on people with learning difficulties.

So you show 3 comments to somehow validate your viewpoint. Not one of them alone, or all 3 combined even scratches the surface of making me sit back and think..."Yup, you have a point"

Again as I mentioned before, but now ask you. Have you ever played a game, participated in a sport, a group activity, a quiz..?..and endless more examples - in your life. I reckon 99.9% yes to one or more such things.

And that little buzz, where you sit up, or clench your fist with a smile, or run screaming down the pitch like a freight train being chased by an engry engineer moment of triumph..ad infinitum examples.

I stand by the strong words I used in terms of your bizarre assertion..

Utter Nonsense

I know right? Manchester is near me, that's how I know where Sheffield is. In that southern corner next to Glasgow.

The comments I mentioned were evidence of the intellectual snobbery of some folk on here. I don't think it's that much of a stretch to conclude that they would feel superior to anyone who doesn't have their level of knowledge. Clearly you disagree and that's fine, but it just left a negative impression on me.

I don't usually partake in competitive things like quizzes or competitions because I nearly always lose. As I'm not good at anything I stopped with all that stuff a long time ago. But no I never celebrated any victory in an ostentatious manner as that would be in bad taste and I try to be as refined as possible.

^ On the contrary, you've very good at putting your point across in a very succinct and entirely reasonable way, if this post is anything to go by.
