Agree to an extent, but you're missing out the context there. She DID start to talk in the way you felt she should have (to my mind), while trying to justify herself at the same time (which is what this farcical "press conference" was all about in terms of parading the HMs up there and being asked questions to "defend" themselves).
But as has been picked out many times on this thread, the "knob-head" remark - as stupid and gobby as it came across - was directly after one of the press hacks said Sam had been "CASHING IN". Knowing Steph as we do (well, as far as TV show will allow), it was obvious that was designed to press a button. Not callous from her in a deliberate way, just very stupid and a defensive response
