LG will be launching the new G5 at Mobile World Congress on the 21st February 2016 at 1pm UK time.

Rumours suggest the G5 will feature a modular design along with a 5.3-inch Quad HD display, perhaps a dual-screen design like the V10, as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, a 16-megapixel dual-lens camera and a fingerprint scanner.

That's just typical!

I've recently upgraded to a G4 on a two year contract!

Whingeing aside, the G5 looks impressive.

Mobile phone releases follow predictable cycles. Most manufactures except Apple use Mobile World Congress in Barcelona every February to show off their new flagship phones. With the phones available by the Spring. If they decide things wont be ready for MWC then they will still follow a Spring release schedule. Apple on the other hand use the Autumn cycle with the newest iPhone shown off in September and available in September or October.

There are rumours Apple will release an new cheaper iPhone possibly called the iPhone 5SE in March?

Always On Display

The LG G5 will feature an always on display for basic notifications and clock. Looks like it may be along the lines of the Moto X.

Thanks for that.

I shall remember that in 2017 when I upgrade next.

I wish I'd waited for this forthcoming G5, although I am impressed with the G4.

I'm surprised LG don't shift more phones (I don't know anybody with one), as they seem to offer good quality & highly specified phones for a reasonable price, unlike some other manufacturers I could mention.

I didn't see any mention of an SD card slot on those reports, will LG be keeping an SD slot? Or will it be dropped? I know that the LG G4 supports SD, so I doubt that removing it would get a good response (think Galaxy S6).

“There are 32-, 64- and 128GB models touted for the LG G5 and it's thought that the firm will continue to offer expandable storage via a Micro-SD card slot.”

Looks like the SD card slot will stay.

Most of the people I know have either a Samsung or Apple. I've met one person with a LG G3. It's not coincidence that Apple and Samsung are they only ones making money from selling phones.

It needs to be a lot more than 'Always showing the time.'. They needs to get this extended battery when on feature working with at least one sports app at release.

The Yotaphone is likely still better.

Was looking to get a LG G4 when it came out as the G4 isn't a bad phone, apart from the bad Spotify integration, nothing can touch it's camera in my experience. Or reception & signal management.
But since my G4 developed its bootloop issue last week and I've had to deal with the customer service department I'm not so sure now,
Firstly why they are continuing to push the marshmallow update through on devices with the 505 serial number when it's clear there is a hardware fault with them? It's clearly a big issue as the net is full of people moaning.
The other issue is the customer service department are nice enough but nobody seems to be able to get anything right, since Friday I've had 5 collections booked in to collect the phone and 5 times its gone wrong. I strongly suspect delivery 6 will go wrong on Sunday too.
It makes me wish I had an apple.... Oh wait I do and I hate it!

I would be suprised if they put such a small screen on it.

If this date is correct then they will have finally caught up with the release cycle - the G2 was an August release.

Interesting that the G4 is highlighted as having good reception. I've had two and they're both awful.

A new quick cover case has been announced by LG.

Also the LG G4 got much better signal reception compared to the Galaxy S6 but the Huawei P8 seems the best of the 3.

Indeed, Huawei devices seem to have excellent reception. The Huawei Nexus 6P on Vodafone was one of the best devices I have ever used for reception.

Marshmallow hasnt got anything to do with the boot loop issues on 505 serial models so there is no reason for them to stop MM roll out. My G4 suffered boot loop in November and I got very good service from LG, they offered to repair the phone or do a swap with a refurb, I did a swap for my faulty phone then amazingly a week later they also repaired my faulty phone and sent it back to me so now I have two G4's

The G5 could be the most interesting phone at MWC especially the Magic Slot accessories.

On the back of the P8 there is a glass strip to ensure signals are not depreciatedby metal. I do not think that is there on the Nexus, so the P8 should be much better.

It is all relative, with maybe the Samsung S6 getting extra criticism for failing to match the quality of their prior stuff.
edit - I just looked at a 6P andit appears to use the same funtional design trick as the P8, a back strip !

LG G5 Live Launch 1pm

The LG G5 will be launched at 1pm today. You should be able to view it here:

Some very clever ideas (the modular design may well be copied by others) and a lot of gimmicks and impractical solutions.. but all perhaps worth nothing when the phone itself looks just as bad in the 'real' photos.

Joe Public will see this phone as rather ugly, and probably look elsewhere.. and LG isn't exactly a very strong brand in mobile right now anyway.

The upside is that I bet the phone performs well, and will likely drop in price quickly.. so a win for people who can see through marketing hype, or will chuck the phone in a case anyway!

Design looks weird, especially the curves on the front.

They've shrunken the screen down but made the device taller. What has this achieved?

Ooh, this looks good, a removable battery set to stay and an SD card slot that is set to stay? Good choice, in my opinion.

Looks a little ugly to me! Will most likely still buy one since it still has the nice screen & removable battery.

Looks wise, it seems a typical phone, like most others to me.

However, LG seem to have launched the most high end phone going, something a bit unusual for them.
Lots of info and pics here, including side by sides. Whilst I am sure the add-ons are not for everyone, they do highlight the crudutity of your typical bog standard smartphone.

And apparantly the Qualcomm 820 quad Kiro (Coretex A72 like) is built on the new Samsung 14nm gen 2 process. I am getting the impression that the TSMC 16nm was a very tiny bit better than the Samsung gen 1 4nm for efficency, but gen 2 reverses that.

The G5 looks like LG are trying to makes something to stand out from the Android crowed while keep support for the SD card and removable battery. There is a lot to like about this phone. While im not convinced it will sell more than the S7 it shows LG are willing to take risks. It may well be my next phone.
