Obviously. It was always going to get to #1 on hype alone, regardless of the quality of the song.

The good part about this though is that it's kept the dreadful 'Fast Car' remix from the top spot AND given Shawn Mendes the boot. Both dreadful songs.

Smh, loved up by 12 year old One Direction fans, most of whom are probably girls, bring back the early 80s, stuff like what's on BBC 4 at 7.30 on a Thursday night, now THAT was good Pop.

Now if this had been released by anyone else, this would of been lucky to maybe crack the top 30.

Of course it's the fastest selling #1 this year so far.
There's only been 2 UK #1s during January, one was Biebers effort released months ago and Mendes 'Stitches' had also been around for ages until it reached #1, so it's obviously the only UK #1 to enter at the top.

Hopefully Lukas Grahams '7 Years' will knock Maliks mumbling snoozefest off #1 this time next week.

Yep Generic song, mediocre vocals, cliched video - any other new artist would have been virtually ignored but because he used to be in a manufactured kiddy band, he's being hailed as the next big thing *yawn*

Yes!!!

I downloaded 7 Years on iTunes back in December and now it's looking set to become a massive UK hit.

Zayn's debut #1 was inevitable, following in the footsteps of Gary Barlow (first to release a solo single after Take That spilt in 1996), Ronan Keating (first to release a solo single after Boyzone went on hiatus in 1999) and...erm...Bryan McFadden (first to release a solo single after leaving Westlife in 2004).

Ironically, I'd say Gary, Ronan and *gasp* even Bryan have ended up being very successful thanks more so to getting work on TV. Maybe in 10/15 years time, Zayn will be successful as a TV personality.

It should be renamed 'The Shingles Chart'.

Hype aside it's actually a really good track. Deserving of the number 1.

Single sales mean nothing, it's album sales that matter, or so I keep reading.

Album sales only mean anything if you're an established artist like Adele, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Elvis Presley, etc...

Robbie Williams' debut album hardly sold anything when it was first released and took almost a year to finally start selling after Angels became a single.

The charts have changed so much since the late 90s. Now, if Zayn released an album and it limped in at #9 and dropped down after that it would be branded a catastrophic flop. Nobody would think, let's release the best song off the album and see what happens, and six months later Zayn's album finally climbs to #1.

The media are too quick to call "flop" and we have a generation of people who are too much like sheep to make up their own minds and just accept whatever the media tells them.

OT; Craig David defying all the odds and getting a UK top 10 hit in 2016 is to be applauded imo. ...but would a new Craig David album go to #1 in 2016?

And a perfect demonstration of this is today's front page of The Sun, which is claiming that Rihanna's career could be over after her latest album "flopped". It's only been out for a week with hardly any promotion and over 1 million free copies were given out.

And what?

To be clear I think this song and video are awful. Good luck to him though..
