copying DVD to USB device

Is it possible to copy a DVD to a portable USB device. We have two DVDs and would like to watch them on the television and I thought it might be possible to put them temporarily on a USB device which we could plug into the televisions USB socket. We do not have a DVD player except the one's on the laptop,We normally watch films on Netflix,The copy would only for our use.Would Media Player or Ashampoo be any good.If there is no way will just have to connect the laptop to the TV with a HDMI lead but would prefer to just plug in the USB device..Thank's in anticipation

You are talking about using dvd ripping software.
Not entirely sure of what the forum rules are, but you are infringing copyright.

Depends whether your TV can handle a reasonable range of video formats.

Try http://www.makemkv.com/

It only takes around 20 mins or so to convert a full DVD.

It is illegal to copy anything subject to copyright for any purpose other than a few exemptions. Copying a DVD to another medium is not one of the exemptions unfortunately. Even for your own use. The law was briefly changed to allow home copying of CDs and DVDs but that was overturned in the High Court.

Mind you having said all that you stand about as much chance of having the rozzers break down your door to drag you off to the cells as winning the Lottery jackpot without a ticket

Use Handbrake, it's free software to download, to rip DVD's you need the libdvdcss-2.dll file separately which can be downloaded from the internet. This article takes you through the steps it's not too difficult - http://lifehacker.com/how-to-rip-a-d...mputer-5809765

Handbrake can rip to either a MP4 or MKV file, whichever suits you, the PS4 now plays MKV's as well as MP4's, the PS3 can only play MP4's.

I like using DLNA technology to stream shows around the house, copyright law isn't very friendly to anything other than just watching the DVD and nothing else, but it's behind the times.
