After hours on google I can't seem to find anything specific to my situation.
Hopefully someone here can help me?

Up until earlier, I had my TiVo box connected to my Xbox one, then to the sound bar, then the sound bar to the Tv.

This meant I had to use the dvd setting on the sound bar for everything.

Today, I've decided the Xbox is wasted as I don't use it, so I bought a Panasonic DVD player, I can't get the setup working as it should work though?

I've connected as follows...

TiVo box to TV HDMI 1.
DVD player to sound bar HDMI in.
Sound bar HDMI out to HDMI 2 (arc) on the TV.
Optical cable from TV to Soundbar.

Viera link power on and power off are ON at the Tv end and Viera link is ON at the Soundbar.

I was advised at richer sounds that the DVD player has Viera link but I'm not convinced.

When I select Tv on the Soundbar, the tv sound stays on, meaning I have echoed tv unless I turn it down manually.

When I switch any device on, none of the others switch on. Same with off.

When I select DVD on the Soundbar, all seems fine so far.

Once these are sorted I'll mess with remote settings and have as few remote controls as physically possible.

I'd also like the TiVo to auto on and auto off with the TV / Soundbar is this possible?

DVD player (which doesn't matter too much) is the DMP-BDT170EB
TV is Panasonic but I'm struggling with the model number without taking off the wall
Soundbar is a SCHTB485

What model of DVD player is it?

The part of the HDMI connector that handles the viera link (generically called HDMI CEC) is connected to all devices via the TV. Some devices don't deal with this properly, they can block all other CEC capable devices from working

Have you tried simplifying things? e.g. try only the TV and soundbar connected together, no DVD player or TiVo. Does the TV appear to control the power and volume then? If so, add one of the other devices, and see if it still works. Then try it with the remaining device.

With a modern TV you shouldn't need the optical link between TV and soundbar - the HDMI (ARC) should handle all that, plus power and volume controls using the TV's remote over the viera link. I'd probably connect the DVD player directly to the TV too.

Whether or not the TiVo can turn on or off with the TV depends on the functionality TiVo has actually implemented. They may not have designed it to do that. Never had Virgin TV so I have no idea what it is meant to do.

(1) You don't need HDMI ARC and Optical connected at the same time. Simplify the connection and use one or the other bot not both.

(2) If using ARC then check that the gear (a) supports it and (b) actually supports it properly. i.e. Panasonic's entry level TVs have an ARC feature but it doesn't support controlling the soundbar volume via the TV remote. The models higher in the range do.

(3) The suggestion by moox about trying something basic first is bang on correct. Do this. Get the soundbar and TV working together first. Then add one device at a time and check the functionality.

You should also read all the manuals. I know it's a drag but when you make assumptions about the way you think things should work then you end up down a blind alley.

I've sorted many things from this thread.

I did as Suggested, went basic.

I narrowed a cheap crap HDMI cable down, and removed that.
I then found that my intermittent sound was a faulty wall plate HDMI socket.
I've removed both of those at the end behind the tv, pulled the cables through and added a brushed plate instead of modules, far less connections, joins and cables this way!
Removed the optical cable as I'm using arc.

After powering the Soundbar down for 5 mins and doing this, all seems well.

The Soundbar now powers on and off with the TV and now the volume on the TV mutes and controls together using my TIVO remote, which is awesome.

Next up, auto power of the TiVo box and potentially the DVD player too...

The TiVo supports this, as my Xbox used to power the TiVo box both up and down when that was connected, as for the DVD player, who knows.

What I'd like to know, is how I can get this working on the TiVo box, or can I simply not do this?
