I have very fine, straight hair that I've had long for several years and normally wear up, usually plaited or in a bun. I also have a wispy fringe.

Ten days ago we moved to the coast from Birmingham and my hair's disaster area. As soon as the wind blows or it gets damp (and it's been both most of the last 10 days!) any bits that come loose from the plait/bun and the whole of my fringe go even wispier and look as though they've been crimped. The ends of my fringe turning into upwards wings just adds to the general not-a-good-look-ness of it all.

I don't want to have it cut short because that would let all of it get frizzy and very Worzel Gummidge all the time. I've tried gel and spray on the sides to cut down escapes from the plait and it seems to work but my fringe has got me beaten. Has anyone had a similar problem and cured it?

I'm wondering about having a fuller, thicker fringe in case that makes it look less thin and scraggy when it's damp but I don't want to risk making the whole lot look even worse!

Can any hairdresser or seaside-dweller advise me before I shave it off and invest in a whole lot of hats?

No you just have to embrace the windswept and interesting look or wear a hat. I generally look like I don't own a brush or seagulls have nested in my air. I have an array of winter hats

I think with a heavier fringe (which I have btw) is easier to control as its weightier. I would definitely go for it.

If you have a large Boots by you, have a look at the Afro hair section. They have this stuff that effectively glues down the fluffy parts of the hair line. I believe they call it the "nappy" part of the hair.

I would have loved to introduce you to the Karmin Heat Protection & Shining Spray but I see it is still out of stock,! I currently use Pro-Naturals argan oil but I think the spray is going to be so much easier to use. I would love to swop my straight hair for your curls.

I have the same sort of problem (except I have fine curly hair prone to extreme frizz) - I live by the beach for the summer and my hair is bad enough on a sunny day (the salt in the air makes it a ball of frizz), on a damp day it's horrendous.

I'm afraid I haven't found any products that work on mine (most just make my hair greasy) and different hair styles haven't made any difference, I've got a fairly heavy side fringe that spends pretty much the whole summer pinned back or pushed back with a hairband. I tend to go for the ponytail or bun for the bulk of my hair and then pins for the bits that don't reach. And then a large amount of hairspray. And hats. I have a variety of hats. And hoodies (I'm a hooded yob at 28 and I'm not ashamed of it because when I get indoors my hair is tidy).

I tend to wander around Devon thinking uncharitable thoughts at women I pass whose hair looks lovely and every time I see someone rocking the same look as me I fight the urge to high five them.
