A heads up for anyone interested that the Superbowl will be broadcast tomorrow night (Sunday 6th February) on BBC2, including Coldplay's performance as the half-time act. I'll be watching as I love them, but it seems that they will be joined by Beyonce and Bruno Mars which I'm a bit annoyed about seeing as they only have 12 minutes on stage! I can understand having Beyonce there as she sings on their new album, but Bruno as well seems a bit much IMO. I think Coldplay are more than capable of putting on a great show by themselves but maybe they lacked the confidence to do that, or maybe they just wanted to do something a bit different?

Either way, I hope its a good performance and I think it will be!

Coldplay said they aren't performing 'Hymn For The Weekend' tomorrow. Beyonce is presumably singing her own new song, 'Formation' which she just dropped.

I really hope not!!! Bit ridiculous if Coldplay's 12 minute performance includes plugging somebody else's song!

Sorry to disappoint. It's the 50th Super Bowl so they're pulling out all the stops. Coldplay on there own just aren't big enough I'm afraid. I'm sure it'll be a great show though.

It's tradition these days, you just can't do the superbowl half time show without a few guests. Last year Katy Perry had Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz. Previously we've had Bruno Mars with RHCP, and Beyonce brought on her former Destiny's Child band mates.

Beyonce again!? BOO. Although i like Hymn for The Weekend.
Coldplay deserve the slot.

I still haven't forgiven her for how she treated Sam Bailey

Did you read this somewhere? Fair enough having a guest or two if they must, but using it to promote someone else's new record is ridiculous! And of course Coldplay are big enough, they fill stadiums around the world!

I don't really see how a new Beyonce single counts as 'pulling out all the stops' anyway.

Surely they will perform Hymn For The Weekend?

It would be such a wasted opportunity and a real head scratcher if Coldplay and Beyonce performed together over 12 minutes and didn't perform the one song where they both provide vocals.

That's like Coldplay and Rihanna in 2012 performing together and deciding not to perform Princess Of China.

If Beyonce is only using the Superbowl to promote Formation then that's ridiculous. It seems more like Beyonce's just there to promote TIDAL if nothing else. When will Jay Z, Beyonce and co realise that TIDAL is never going to rival Spotify.

The Who are one of the few bands not to disappoint at the Superbowl. For a fan of a band 12 minutes is never gonna be satisfactory, the sound is never that great and the crowd are more interested in the cheerleaders. Sorry

Well if Katy Perry isn't big enough, if Beyonce herself isn't big enough, then Coldplay aren't big enough. I'm talking about the Super Bowl here, not their ability to sell out stadiums with their own fans. This has to appeal to the widest possible audience. That's why there's always guests.

Chris Martin said in a press conference that they aren't singing 'Hymn For The Weekend'. Probably because it isn't one of their biggest hits anyway and you surely want to showcase your best at such a big event.

I thought U2 did the best ever in Super Bowl 36 just after 9/11

That plus the Vinatieri match winning field goal with seven seconds to go.

The match is the big event.

The half time show, is what it is..... just a show.
You can bet many of the spectators won't even have heard of Coldplay. They won't really care who performs, other than it's usually quite a visual spectacle for them.
They'll cheer anyone, it's that sort of an occasion.

I'm referring more to the huge TV audience. The half time show, the commercials and the game all make it the huge TV event that it is. Millions of people who don't usually watch American Football will be watching. There will be people who sit through it just to see the HT show.

Really?

I can't understand why people would sit through a couple of hours of a game a lot of whom don't understand, just to watch 12 minutes of Coldplay, at half-time, that's gonna be around 1.00am on Monday.

The whole match will be on til around 3.00am. or later. But I imagine some might record it. They'd be better off watching them on YouTube.

I'll use the half-time break to make a sandwich and a cup of tea, I'm bound to have drunk most of my Budweisers by then!

Well some will. And a significant number will in the US itself. The majority will be waiting for Beyonce though, not Coldplay.

So Coldplay won't perform a new single because it hasn't been a hit yet, but Beyonce will sing a song that nobody had heard until yesterday? Suggests a bit of difference in ego level between those two acts!

Sounds like Beyonce blatantly just sees this as a chance to plug her new stuff. I wish she wasn't appearing, she's had her turn doing the Superbowl gig already!

I think some people here seriously underestimate the popularity of Coldplay, I'd say they're a fair bit bigger than Katy Perry and arguably Beyonce as well. I'm sure they will put on a good show but I do believe they could have pulled it off without help, they have plenty of anthemic songs to choose from and are known for their extravagent live shows.

.
Difference is that a new Beyonce song will create a buzz that Hymn For The Weekend won't. Coldplay are happy with Beyonce being there and obviously think it will add to their show. I wouldn't normally be supportive of an artist just turning up to the Super Bowl to perform a new song but given the strong political message behind Beyonce's new track, I think it's fascinating that she's going to get the chance to push that to such a huge audience.

Isn't it the same most years? There is a headliner and guest appearances. No different to Missy Elliot performing her own song during Katy Perry's set last year.

Rumours are that Rihanna and Justin Timberlake could also be making an appearance.

OK fair enough... I just find it odd that they try to cram so much into 12 minutes! I hope that there are no more 'surprise' guests though, Coldplay have enough tunes on their own!

But to be fair, so does everybody else who does it.
