You connect either the yellow composite video lead
or the black s-video lead, whichever gives best results. Plus the red and white audio leads.
As VHS is composite video anyway, the yellow composite lead should be fine.
I think I only got a black and white picture when experimenting with s-video.
I haven't used one of these USB devices myself, as I already had a video capture/TV tuner card in the PC I was using.
I've also used the VHS/DVD recorder method (actually a VHS player + DVD/HDD recorder), and have to agree that you tend to get slightly better results that way, although there's more work to get the video on the PC.
However, with VHS tapes, you're never going to approach DVD quality anyway.
I also agree that if you have a lot of tapes the process is going to get old very quickly, as the initial transfer has to be done in real time.
I set about transferring loads of music videos to the computer a few years ago, and I've still only got half done.
