How do you know the temperature of a microwave?

I have some bought plastic containers which are not to be heated to over 100 degrees celcius. I have a 850w microwave, how would I know the temperature the microwave reaches to?

All you need to know is that they are classed as microwave safe. If there is nothing to say that then don't use them.

Ofcourse the other way to tell is to put one in, crank it up and see if it melts

Depends what you put in them.

Water will only heat to 100'C as it will boil, but sugar will heat to way hotter than 100'C.

I would only put "wet stuff" in them personally.
Anything sugary only in glass or china / pyrex

Thanks for info. What about pasta or chicken/pork meat?

There was a vogue/craze in America for putting these giant gobstoppers, called Jawbreakers, into the microwave before eating them (why?). The kids would take them out and then bite into them.... with unhilarious results. The different layers (which had different colour/flavour additives) would melt at slightly different temperatures. This meant a microwaved Jawbreaker could look intact, but contain pressurized super-heated molten sugar in some of its layers. Cue third-degree mouth/facial burns.

You don't, microwave ovens don't get hot only the food does.

They contain water so it'll reach 100 degrees then will stay there until all the water dries out of it, after which it'll probably catch fire.
