Ben Miller for the next Doctor.
Yes I was watching the one show tonight...
Mmmm. Comedian. Proven track record with big BBC shows. Has appeared in Dr Who before, and since he has a degree in physics will probably have a reasonable clue about the practicalities of realigning the neutron flow. Sounds good to me. |

For a moment there I read that as Ben Stiller...
Personally, I think he would make a fantastic Master with the goatee beard. His performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robots of Sherwood strongly reminded me of Ainley's Master and was one of the few good things about that episode. For me though, I have my fingers crossed for Robert Carlyle as the next Doctor. He's said for years he'd definitely be up for it and he's on the list of potential candidates. oh for heavens sake, we don't even know that peter capaldi is leaving at the end of season 10 yet, who the next companion is going to be would be a far more apt topic for discussion.

Robert Carlyle as the Doctor:
https://31.media.tumblr.com/175a2927...84R1qc3sn2.jpg I've recongised his name, mainly through him being suggested so much for the role of The Doctor, and now I've seen him in action I have to concur he'd be a superb fit! ![]() I do worry though that in a hypothetical scenario where he were considered, he'd be a bit too similar to Peter Capaldi right now. Scottish, older white male. I personally am happy with whoever is right for the role... but there were already worrying numbers of complaints that a black actor wasn't cast for the sake of it with Peter Capaldi, and evermore calls for a female Doctor as well. I'm open-minded to both, caring only that the actor is right... apparently others are more inclined towards casting tokenism.

I have absolutely loved his turn as Rumpelstiltskin in Once Upon A Time. In fact the show now seems to be bending over backwards to its own added detriment in order to keep him on board with it!

To be fair, "who would make a good doctor" is the eternal question that is always asked, regardless of who's in the job, or how long they've been there.
![]() QUOTE=Lord Smexy;81454375]I would be totally fine with a female Doctor if they had somebody really good and Doctory for the role, although that statement tends to get people jumping on me as a "politically correct feminazi" I just don't see how casting a woman would be all that different considering the drastic changes the character has always been through. There'd be something else between the Doctor's legs, but it's not like we see that anyway.[/quote]I see it basically the same way. If they get a good actor for the role, then they're in a unique position with Doctor Who where they can change the gender of the lead and keep it canonical. At the end of the day, what does gender need to really matter for? I started watching the show at the age of 13 when it was revived in 2005...if Christopher Eccleston had regenerated into a woman at the end of that year I'd have thought it was pretty awesome, and likely quite fun. I don't think gender has to matter at all, so long as the person in the lead position is a good fit for the role. My only slight issue, and it really is slight, is that the Doctor has been thirteen white, British males so far. That is indeed more the result of the show coming from a time when that particular demographic (one I'd fit into myself) was the one that was most inclined to get the lead job, rather than any reflection on the show itself right now. But if you wanted to you could easily work it in that gender-changes are a less frequent occurence through regeneration that are entirely possible but aren't commonplace. If you wanted to try and explain it away. But yes, find a good female lead and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Not to turn this thread into another female-Doctor-fest.

I think Richard Armitage would make a great Doctor. He was brilliant as both Lucas North in Spooks and Gisburne in Robin Hood. He can easily play characters that have to do a lot of action such as running and trying to save people.

Personally whilst I liked Ben Miller in Death in Paradise and as Lester in Primeval his Doctor Who 'audition' as the Sheriff last year was frustrating.
He was okay with what he had but the script just wasn't that great really so that it doesn't inspire me to think of him playing the Doctor. His previous roles suggests his forte seems to be more comedy and I wonder if he can truly play the drama the role of the Doctor needs as well as our exceptional Peter Capaldi.. Mind you Peter's role in Series 4 wasn't that significant but in fairness seemed less caricatured than the sheriff. I want Peter to stay for a very long time so sadly no for me |

Nope, not a strong enough actor.
Besides, I think he might be older than the BBC will cast, post Capaldi. |

I'm not wishing Peter Capaldi away at all - I'd like him to stay for at least one season with Chibbers - but I'm thinking Ben Wishaw would be good. His Q persona in Spectre and Skyfall shows he can be suitably "doctorish". By the time the role is available he'd be the perfect age.
Whether he'd actually be available or interested in playing the Doctor is anybody's guess. |
