Zayn becomes the first UK artist to score a No. 1 with a debut single on BB Hot100
Quote:
>>> While the definition of "boy band" leaves room for interpretation, Zayn's coronation of the Hot 100 places him in elite company. If we consider the Beatles a founding pop music boy band, Zayn is the first one-time member of a Hot 100-charting boy band to score a No. 1 with a debut single on the survey since George Harrison. The Quiet Beatle launched with the four-week No. 1 "My Sweet Lord"/"Isn't It a Pity" in 1970, following the Fab Four's split earlier that year.
The song is beyond bland though...

I do find it hilarious that 1D never managed a #1 on the Hot 100 and yet Zayn's managed it at the first attempt. I've only listened to the song once. That was enough.

I'm very surprised he hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the world of streaming.
![]() Still, it's a great achievement and, as jlp95bwfc posted, 1D have never had a #1 so I thought Zayn would get to around #5. |

The hardwork now begins.
I know he gets dragged for lacking charisma, but I think he has the potential to be huge. I think they are going to wait to late for Harry |

I'm a 57 year old straight man (this would normally be far too much info but I know where the comments could go if I didn't put this in), have never paid any real attention to 1D's output and I think the song is superb. And like has been said before, 1D never had a US no. 1 so your theory is most definitely flawed. I'm sure there are some who are embarrassed to admit they like this because of the connotations but I've never been a music snob and can't stand such people (my ignore list is populated exlusively by such posters!). If I like something (by anyone) I am more than happy to say so. No matter what you think of this/him the fact is it is a verifiably massive achievement. Who knows where he goes from here? Not heard anything else by him so this could be a fortuitous one-off a song. Time will tell. |

Good for him. Now he really needs to do the work to give this track some longevity - it'd be nice if it didn't immediately tank the week after. Although it's holding up well on iTunes so far. |

And just to prove i'm not a music snob I quite enjoyed the previous number one single 'Stitches' - I thought that was a decent melodic pop song with a catchy chorus. |

The title is misleading as Leona Lewis also scored a #1 with a debut single on the Hot 100.

Surely must be a complete deficit of popular music in the USA if this tosh can hit number one straight away. Beiber domination has worn off, Adele 'hello' is calming down and there isn't really much competition.
It makes you wonder a few things... Was the departure of Zayn from the group widely publicised in the USA resulting in significant hype and anticipation of a new single? Is Zayn seemed the more desirable member of the band? Would the other 1D members have achieved this success had they also departed at a similar time and released a single in these circumstances? |

I'm not sure it counts as a debut single even if it's the first she released in that country. It wasn't Leona's debut single.

We've already established that 1D have never reached the summit of the BB Hot100 so it's clear that the single isn't just appealing to 1D fans. I don't suppose you've ever considered the possibility that people have bought/streamed the single because they, you know, like it?

I'm surprised you think it's "superb" because I would have thought someone your age who grew up in an era when music was far more melodic and memorable than it is nowadays would think this is instantly forgettable garbage. To my ears this song is boring with no melody that grabs you at all. It's not a patch on Howard Jones or Kool and the Gang or anyone of that era.
Oh Lord, here we go. Of course music from the past was 100% fantastic, the sun shone brightly from April until October and every single sketch Monty Python did was incredibly funny. I think it may be called rose tinted glasses syndrome....

Amen to that. So much grumbling and sour grapes on this forum.
Tell me about it. It really is pathetic. In news sure to p*ss off the music snobs even more, unlike 1D's singles (so I'm told) this song is holding up very well on iTunes in the major markets. What can this mean? It clearly means it's attracting pretty substantial interest from outside 1D's demographic (me being just one example ). And this without any major airplay in the US. Mr Malik may be onto something here but I await the 2nd single and album release before any definitive conclusions can be made.As you were... |

Can I just add though as much as it is an achievement unlike most with debut singles Zayn was extremely well known in the US.via 1D. It's not like he was just starting out and it's the first they heard of him.

If there is one sure fire thing on this forum it's as soon as something become popular Konebyvax will be straight on here championing it from those nasty "music snobs".

100% agreed. But i'm not sure how many ex-boyband members have gone no. 1 in the US with their debut solo single. I don't even think Justin Timberlake achieved this feat. And N'SYNC were way bigger in the US than 1D ever have been, that's for sure. Make no mistake, it's a pretty big achievement.

Oohh, I completely forgot about you. Join the other 2 on my ignore list. Have fun in there. ![]() Aren't you the one who bases what you like on Metacritic scores? One parting shot for you - as soon as something becomes popular you can be sure that the usual music snobs on here will be seeking out my posts to register their outrage at the content therein. Totally transparent behaviour.
