My Cats gone antisocial
howardl
08-02-2016
Bobby our puss has changed over the weeks, he is about 10 and has always been an outdoor cat, now he chooses a place to sleep and stays there( window sill) most of the time,
He goes out early 5am for about 15mins and maybe a couple of time for very short times about 4pm,
He seems to be eating well, dry food .....he has got into the habit of drinking from a trickling tap when we go to the bathroom( we turn it on for him ).he has his own water bowl.... .he sometimes goes in the bathroom and calls us.
He purrs when we fuss him but he doesn't sleep on our bed or with us on the settee like he use to.
Could anyone figure out whats wrong..?..if anything is.
Thanks

Amused by the drinking thing. My cat's favourite spot is one of those hammock things hooked over the radiator in my bedroom. Although she has a water bowl next to it, as well as the one by her feeding station downstairs, she much prefers to drink out of the glass of water on my bedside table. I have to place a piece of card over it, so I know if she has been at it while I'm asleep. (I don't fancy drinking from it if she's been there first!)

Maybe there is a new cat in town and he is being bullied so decides to spend most of his time indoors. It seems something has spooked him outside.

Back in Nov there was a new cat..it used to come into our house and pinch his food,
But he has now been rehoused andnot beenaround since before christmas....not unless there's another.
We are worried he might have diabetes..as he is drinking alot from the tap (well, we think alot)...but there again he would finish his water bowl as well and also sleeping alot,
May take a visit to the vet.

It may be cat in house previously put out of joint.

They're very territorial plus it's winter time so colder, storms so may wish stay in more.

If puts mind at rest get checked over though just in case.

To me sign is not eating, bad looking coat, appears miserable looking as sign unhealthy cat.

Nothing is wrong - it's just a cat being a cat. They will do whatever suits them at any given time. They aren't always going to want to sleep on your bed, and they aren't always going to spend a long time outside, especially at this time of year.

My cat will sometimes start or end the night on my bed, or even join me in the middle of the night, or use me as a launch pad to get on the window sill. But she will only very rarely stop on my bed the entire night. It's been the same with all my cats.

As for drinking from the tap, they would often sooner find their own way of getting what they want, than accepting what we lay out for them deliberately. My cat likes to use ways in and out that I can't use, like the window and the defunct serving hatch between my lounge and the kitchen.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. His behaviour sounds perfectly normal.

Thanks for your reply, hope you are right (well i want you to be)...we're still taking him to the vet for a check up,
After all theses weeks of sleeping on window sills he's just jumped onto out new settee and now fast asleep, we were so worried the new smells of furniture would freak him out!...quite the opposite

Need a check over from the vet. Our dog started to sleep a lot more and turned out she had a heart problem. Vet gave her tablets and she went back to normal and lived a couple more years. Worth a good check over whenever there's any change in behaviour. Sometimes it can be caused by pain. Hope your cat is ok.

Well thanks ...went to the vet , he didn't get him out of the basket, just observed him and asked questions.....one answer we gave was he was in accident 7 yrs ago...the vet suggested a pain killer , as he may be suffering from what happened, arthritis etc. you may be right riversmum
Also, it might be phsycological ,(bullying by other cats)...so pain killer for a week , see if any change.if not it's probably not pain....psycological?...dunno, may go for bloodtests,
At the mo he's sprawled out on the settee snoozing
