Jake Wood is full of it. He was begging for a new contract a few months before he "decided" to take a break. The decision for him to leave was taken out of his hands. He was always going to the press professing his love for EastEnders and his intention to stay for years. There's no way he asked for a break. He's doing the same now because he lost his job as the voice of Geiko Insurance. Even this article features a lie. 10 years without a break? He got at least 3 months off every other year to spend in the US!
Arrogant actor. Can't stand him. I hope Max doesn't return. |

I think he means he returns to filming in September so will be onscreen middle of October which is when Abi is apparently due her baby.

I want Vanessa Gold to get delicious revenge and hand Max Branning his rear in a secluded torture chamber in a storyline spanning a decent time period!

Opinions on the actor aside though, am I the only one who is slightly grossed out by the Beales' blithely consigning an innocent man to prison because they're "protecting Bobby". Considering the number of characters who actually know that Max is innocent, is it likely that none of them would have a moral compass?

![]() As for the characters who know for certain that Max is innocent, I presume the Beales rationalise it away by remembering Max shagged Lucy and payed her for the service. The Mitchells probably remember how Max swindled The Arches off them. The only characters who don't have any motivation to keep quiet are Lauren and Liam since they're related to Max. Obviously he's not a very popular fella so he's an easy scapegoat with minimal guilt associated with him going down for a crime he didn't commit

untrue... If the produces wanted rid they'd just axe him
I never said they wanted to axe him but they obviously wanted rid of him for a while since they clearly sent him on his way without granting his request for a contract renewal. |

It's not untrue. You can find articles online from when he was in Strictly. He was fishing for a new EastEnders contract that never came. To then say he needed a break after working non stop is the untruth. 1.It contradicts his previous statement about hoping for a new contract and 2.He hasn't worked non stop as Max for 10 years as he's had long breaks almost every other year since he joined.

This is my understanding of how things played out to -the bbc are trying to do more for less with their EastEnders budget so are writing some stories that knock out some of the more expensive cast members for a long stretch in order to balance the budget. It's been going on for years but is obviously more so since the licence fee freeze in 2010 and budget cuts announced in 2015.
I do think Max will return but I'm hoping it's just a brief return to conclude his storyline. The Brannings ran their course ages ago. There's no need for Lauren to come back either. |

The bbc have made no secret their trying to save money even June Brown said years ago they limited her appearances to save money because she's so expensive. |

I'd have like to have seen his reaction to Stacey's psychosis actually.
Regarding budget cuts, maybe that is why we are seeing more of Denny and Bobby thee days! Child actors are cheaper .

Max was a good character his first few years but has been stale and repetitive for the majority of his time on the programme. I think it's only because they struggle to create new male characters he's being kept around. Jake Wood is lucky in that regard because Max has been boring for quite some time. It's a shame because he had potential in his early years.
Apparently Jessie Wallace and Shane Ritchie don't want to return to EastEnders anyway, they'd prefer to stay on their spinoff full time because it would give them time to pursue other work such as theatre for the rest of the year. They're hopeful the spinoff will go on for years. Good news about Ritchie, I can't stick Alfie Moon but it's a shame about Jessie Wallace. I find Kat one of the most watchable and interesting characters and she brought a spark to the January episodes few characters are capable of. |
