Does anybody know when the 5th series is returning to our screens?

What do you think will happen?

5th series?
Are they skipping the 4th then?

And you could ask in the Last Tang thread!

"It’s also been reported that Diane Keaton has purchased the rights to remake the show for the US,"

Typical! Why does US TV have to remake everything? Why not just show the original?

Because the yanks can't be bothered with realistically portrayed characters?
...and of course also filmed in L.A. or NYC venues

Looking forward to this as Xmas. One of my favourite things on the telly.

What possible appeal would a show rooted in the nuances of t'North have for an American audience? They're really not going to be queuing up for jokes and references they don't get in an accent they can't understand in a place that just looks so unlike Nova Scotia.

Yeah, some of the characters would truly baffle them - Gillian (brilliantly played by Nicola Walker) for example.

An American audience would probably think it was Halifax, Nova Scotia, if they kept the title although CBC might go for it.

I'm looking forward to this, can't believe it's been nearly two years since it was last on!

Don't know if it's the same in the UK but it's on Netflix here.

Don't think it's on UK Netflix. Unlikely they'll repeat it or put it on iPlayer. Probably available to buy on BBC Store though (or torrent!)

Yet we have to watch things they made and just guess what some references are ? I can't see why they can't learn about us in the same way we have had to learn about them.

Have to? Nobody's putting a gun to your head, are they? There are no US shows on BBC or ITV these days anyway. Channel 4 and 5 mostly use their spin-off channels to show anything that does come from the States and there's hardly a lot of it. Nobody's doing the hard sell on US programmes at all and certainly not those which require an appreciation of extremely localised knowledge.

Have to as in they don't tend to remake them for a British audience not have to watch them, but I think you knew that anyway.

I enjoy American programmes btw I just think it could be enjoyable to a states audience to see our untouched programming too. It seems to me they are denying USA viewers of a treat in many cases the beautifully acted scenes cannot be bettered by setting them elsewhere with other actors.

They do. Lot's of UK shows are aired in the US including Last Tango, Luther, Doc Martin, The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd, The Night Manger, London Spy and many others.

Then I've no idea why the person I was originally answering think last tango cannot be understood by states audiences

BBC America does make a lot of British shows available in their original form, not just Doctor Who and Sherlock but The Living and The Dead, Ripper Street, Undercover etc. including some shows which also have US remakes such as Broadchurch and Being Human. But you can only lead the horse to the water. The fact is that a really successful show here will usually stand a much better chance of success in the States as a remake (The Office, for example) while the opposite is not true. UK audiences would rather see US shows, if at all, as they are.

You started it! By moaning about the need to remake rather than show the original!

Clearly it remains the case that to get a reasonable audience a remake is considered necessary. I don't know who shows it in US, (BBC America I would guess) but I can't imagine that its mainstream viewing.
