There aren't many likeable characters in this at all. I like little Flora and possibly Robbie. The rest of them are all dysfunctional cardboard stereotypes. So disappointing!

Aside from that, does anyone believe someone is in the barn? I think it could be some kind of rough sleeper who will become a regular character.... that's my prediction. I can't figure out how he could fit in, though. The fact that the little girl saw someone probably means there was someone, though I don't believe they'd let someone her age play in the barn alone.

No way. The fact they are such fully rounded characters is what makes the show.

I don't think so. Although, even if she had it wouldn't be evident on this series as they didn't start filming until July (and were still finishing scenes in October).

IMHO this is not as good as the other series I will watch the next episode then I hope they will leave it at that, Anne Reid has said she wasn't keen on doing more after the last series & you can see why the barn plot is a bit ott.

Has she? You'll have some evidence of that, of course, bearing in mind that she told This Morning today that it was lovely to be back doing the character and Nicola Walker told the Radio Times that if Sally Wainwright writes another series they'll all be there with bells on?

I still wish Caroline would meet Sgt. Catherine Cawood in one scene.

Same here. The hour flies by. I love it. Not sure about Caroline's new love interest though. She's a bit much.

I'm really pleased john is back too.

I enjoyed it. I was wondering if Caroline's new love is going to turn into a bit of a bunny boiler - she seemed to be taking a close interest in little Flora

Great dialogue brilliantly acted as always. It confirmed all my worst fears about the north as a place that never really dries out

If I closed my eyes it felt like I was listening to a play on radio 4. What happened to Alan's son, Gary, from his one night stand? Maybe that was explained in passing.

I suspect that plenty of shit will hit the fan tonight

I wondered if he would be mentioned, also at the end of the previous series wasn't he going to pay for Alan & Celia to go to Australia? they've not mentioned if they went or not

I'm a big fan of the show but did detect signs of it starting to run out of steam last night. Very contrived sub plot with the am dram. Hope for better tonight

Enjoyed it for what it was, but it did feel a little flat and there seemed to be a fair amount of pointless dialogue.

Also, this is probably just me, but I had a hard time working who was whose children / brothers / sisters etc. and a lot of the threads from previous series were kind of half picked up but others not all.

I think with the time gap between the last series it needed either a full series to continue with the existing storylines or a more of a 'stand alone' 90 minute type episode e.g. a group holiday somewhere, special event etcand maybe losing some of supporting cast.

This kind of feels between two stools, but will look in tonight

I loved it. The show still has the same cosy feel it always had - and I slipped right in where it left off. I can't wait for tonights episode. A real treat.

I always liked the contrast between Caroline and Alison's lives. Now, they seem to be living in very similar houses and Caroline is slopping around in baggy jumpers and jeans, with a toddler permanently glued to her hip.

Well she has. Three actually. It's just that the last one was in 2004!
