But throughout his era Moffat was in quite regular contact with his ol' mucker RTD
asking him to write an ep for a season.

I wonder if CC will maintain this tradition and perhaps ask both the previous showrunners if they want to return to their first love, writing.

Already said this in another thread but I can see SM coming back to write at some point but it won't be for a while, probably Chibnall's 2nd or 3rd series at the earliest.


Less chance of it happening with RTD I think.

Unless of course he actually agrees to write one for Moffat in Series 10 then I could see him doing one for Chibnall as well.

SM will not be back for a loong while, I dont blame him.

RTD- Doubtful, if he still wanted to be connected he probably would have written something in Moffat's era.

SM- Season 11 no, but i fully expect him to continue to write an episode or 2 a season afterwards.

as much as I've disliked Moffat's writing lately, i wouldn't mind him popping in for the odd episode now and then
and i'm dying for RTD to write for the series again, i was amazed at how well he wrote Matt in Sarah Jane Adventures. so a big yes to RTD.

I doubt any of them would ever want to return. Who can blame them with the amount of bile thrown at them throughout their tenures as showrunners.

I enjoyed Steven Moffat's writing much more when he wasn't showrunner so it would be fun for him to come back and write a few stand-alone episodes again.

I think RTD wrote wonderfully for the 11th Doctor in the Sarah Jane Adventures. He delivered a really lovely story and some great character moments for the Doctor, Sarah Jane and Jo Grant. He must have some amazing Who stories in his head after all these years!

But, as others have said, it is probably unlikely for both. It feels like RTD has completely moved on from the show now, and taking into account what Mark Gatiss tweeted after the announcement of Chris Chibnall taking over, I would appear Moffat is pleased to going.

Both still love the show, and loved their time on the show, but Doctor Who isn't all they want to do with their lives.

As Moff says, RTD enjoys watching Doctor Who as a fan now, without any of the stress, and makes sure he gets no spoilers. I'm sure Moff will do the same. Both are talented writers who had decent careers before Doctor Who, Moff especially will now be much in demand.

Besides I don't think it's a good idea for Chibnall either. Suppose in S11, Moff's epsiode is the best one of the series, everyone will clamouring for Chibs to be sacked and Moff brought back!

They could. If Chibnall asked them and they accepted.

Whether they will or not, I don't know.

I'd be excited for more Moffat penned epidodes in the future, but I think it would be a long time before he wants to do thay. As for RTD I can personslly live without.

What's far more interesting though is what Chibnall's Who will be like.

I expect it to actually be more horror based, a bit like the Hinchcliffe era.

I think RTD and SM are probably of the same opinion that, given a new showrunner has taken over, it would unfair to detract from him making his own mark.

Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if one or other of them wrote a story under a pen name.

I hope its more like the Douglas Adams era tbh, that was the peak of the original series.

Disagree, the Hinchcliffe era is the peak. Consistent, amazing stories.

I want him to write everything himself, for the majority of episodes kinda like Series 1...
