That is really tragic, reminds me of the plane crash that killed members of the American rock band, Lynard Skynard.

This year so far has been very cruel to music fans and also to the music industry as a whole, robbing us of so many people.

Awful indeed. This year seems to be cursed if you are a musician.

I won't pretend that I've ever heard of them but this is so sad........to see talented young lives cut off in such a random occurrence.......life really does hang by a thread

RIP and condolences to their families and friends

Didn't know them nor hear them but that's a terrible tragedy for all of the families. They were following their dreams but horrible for that to happen.

I'm also someone who had never heard of Viola Beach until reading about this on the BBC News website.

Truly devastating, just can't comprehend how the families must be feeling. 5 lives lost just like that.

Their singles have had a significant boost today on iTunes. I've just listened to Swings And Waterslides and it's a great track. Shame UK radio didn't see the potential to push this last year with more airplay. Looks like Viola Beach will finally get the hit they deserved but thanks to tragic circumstances.

R.I.P.

Completely agree with this post.

I've never heard of them before and listening to their music now, they certainly weren't my thing but how tragic that a bunch of young lads with the world at their feet have died following their dreams.

Just seen the tribute at the City game as at least one of them was a big fan apparently.

RIP - gone far too soon

The single is now #7 on Itunes so a great tribute but I hope people are buying it because its a good song as well and demonstrating how so many young bands would do well in the charts if they got airplay., I did know it before but only heard it a couple of times last year. In radios defence they are part of BBC Introducing and have had play on Radio 1

I had never heard of them until I watched this evening's news, but how very tragic, and what a shocking waste of all those young lives. My heart goes out to their families.

Reading between the lines it's very possible the driver had fell asleep at the wheel.
It's a terrible waste of so many young gifted musicians. They had it all ahead of them.
Life can be awfully cruel sometimes.

Yes U96, I was thinking the exact same thing. Another driver said that the car went straight past them, side swiped another vehicle, then went straight through the barriers and over the edge. Considering the time of night that it happened, I also strongly suspect that driver fatigue is the cause. RIP. What a terrible tragedy.

I believe there were signs saying the bridge was unpassable. Can anyone confirm this?

From what I have read, the barriers were down, as the bridge had lifted up to allow a ship to pass under. Other cars had stopped at the barriers to wait, but this car just plowed on through.

My mate narrowly survived (as a passenger) on the A9 in Scotland back in the mid 80's.
He was sleeping and woke up to see the front of a truck in his face and the driver (his pal) screaming. He had fell asleep and sadly never survived. The trucker had seen them veering towards him and slammed the brakes on,but it wasn't enough. This was about 3 in the morning.

There were STOP barriers up,but the car ploughed straight through it.
