dont know if we are hijacking the thread now but the talk about practising putting made me think of something i read recently
what it was suggesting is when you practice you are training your brain to recognise how hard you need to hit a putt , kinda like muscle memory. so when you stand over a 6 foot putt or a ten foot putt it isn't really necessary to think about how hard you need to hit it, its all sort of done subconsciously based on what you see and the practice you have done so it was saying you need to make sure you dont just practice from the same distance all the time as thats all your brain remembers not sure if any of that makes sense or whether i am explaining it properly always thought for someone just starting out this is the best area to work on , its not hard, its not that time consuming and working on pitching and putting can save you more in the short term than any other part of your game for the effort required |

This is a good site if you decide to go down the 2nd hand route (they also sell new clubs) http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/

2nd hand clubs would probably be best value, but in all the 20 odd years i've been playing i've never had a brand new set. So now that i've finally got some spare cash each month i've got my mind fixed on it. Looking forwarded to just having a bag where all the zips work

Have you decided what to do yet? Full set for the £300 mark or go for a custom fit session?
I did see the below irons which seem a very good deal. http://www.onlinegolf.co.uk/clubs/se...pw-258425.html |

I'm thinking of just going to American Golf to try out a few sets and then looking for a decent price online. I definitely won't be getting a £300 set, my current clubs are still probably better after 10 years of use.

1. If your clubs are ten years old then technology has left them behind. When I first played squash I had a Dunlop bamboo racquet. A decade later they were long obsoletes nd £70/80 carbon racquets were the norm - and incredibly more efficient and kinder on the elbow. Golf's no different. 2. My Club Pro will match any internet price on clubs, trolleys, bags and clothing. I bought my first set in AG after being "assessed" with technology. 18 months later I dumped them after a few lessons with our Pro, some advice from him and, after some internet pricing research, bought a new set off him that were clearly better suited to me. He gets our business every time once we've both done our homework. By the way, there are 28 handicappers out there who will never be anything less and others that can string a mean game together on their day. Some people think it's a "toff's" game. It's anything but. When I go out I play with plasterers, lorry drivers, taxi drivers, surgeons, lawyers and doctors. The common denominator is enjoying the game and good company. Although, winning £1 off your opponent can really bring out a competitive streak

I have another question to ask golfers. Do you guys use a golf laser range finder when playing golf? Or even do you know this kind of thing? Do you think this gadget can help you win a game?

When I started I couldn't judge distance, didn't know how far I could hit a ball and didn't know the capability of each club. Within a few months use all those issues were resolved. It's the best golf aide I've bought. It's now rare to find a golfer that hasn't got one. Lasers are more expensive and will give you exact measurement to the flag. I'm not good enough to want to know that. I just want distance to middle of the green. On our course the colour of the flag tells you whether it's near the front, in the middle ot near the back. A watch deals with all that as it gives you those three measurements. |

In reality if you are playing on a regular basis but not improving then golf isn't your game.

If you've been playing for 20 years,a brand new set of clubs ain't going to improve your game. A club pro will tell you how much potential you have as long as you keep paying for lessons. Find yourself a local course and play a few rounds on your own when the course isn't busy. In reality if you are playing on a regular basis but not improving then golf isn't your game.
My original question was not 'what are the best clubs to improve my game' or 'how can I improve my game' it was 'what is a reasonable amount of money to spend on a new set of clubs for a casual golfer who is trying to get his first handicap'. If someone asked me "how much money should I spend on a new tv" my answer would be "it depends what you want, however if you're buying a 40/42" set for the living room then I wouldn't spend less than £400". I basically just need new clubs, if you could see what is in my bag at the moment (or even just my bag) you would agree. However i've seen some of the cheap starter sets that my friends have bought (some of them less than £200) and i'm really dubious that they are even good enough for an absolute beginner. Was just after other people's opinions. |

I've been thinking about it. I currently only have GPS which is great for long distances but not accurate on close approaches. Then again neither am I so I'm not sure what difference it will make knowing whether the pin is 21 or 22 yards away

In the end my Club Pro sorted me out. I then found the best internet price and he matched it. I bought TaylorMade OS Burner - probably now replaced by Aero burner at £400. I think I paid about £350. TaylorMade are notorious for bring out new models a few times a year. The following year I replaced my Driver and bought two wedges. |

It's like standing on a par three tee when your watch says 138 yards and your partner says "I've got 141 on mine"

I'm stood just hoping to see my ball somewhere on the green ![]() What you see from the Tee is something like this: --------------------------------------------------- Tree _¯_¯_¯_¯_¯_ *** _¯_¯_¯_¯_¯_ Where '--------' is a power line (mulligan if you hit it, per local rules) _ _ _ are bunkers. ¯ ¯ ¯ are the back of the bunkers, blocking sight of the green. *** is about all of the green you can see. The choices are: * Lay up and get to the green with a short iron (or chip if you can). * Aim for what little green you can see and if your ball doesn't catch much air hope that it rolls through the gap. * Aim right (my preferred safe option) as there's a reasonable amount of ground right of the green. * Aim for the green, get decent air, great backspin and stop within a yard or two on the green. The last option is just out for me. I can hit a ball 183 yards off the tee but you then have about ten yards between the back of the bunkers and the back edge of the green. I do NOT produce enough backspin even with my clubs to make that viable

If it goes into the bunker it's not the end of the world as they're close to the green to splash out (depending on the quality of the bunker I suppose and lie).
I can usually get out of a bunker but my ball rarely goes much further than the edge. So landing in bunkers there means at least one more stroke to reach the green ![]() https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.08.../data=!3m1!1e3 |

As long as you don't land on the back slope they are okay. But there's a bit of a lip at the back so if the ball beds in and doesn't roll back down you have a problem.

There's no way I have the accuracy off the tee to worry about trying to aim into any of that - and I rarely hit over 200 yards.

Currently thinking about these irons. I've seen some very good reviews for the price:

They seem reasonable, they sound like the same idea as my RAZRs. Great price there as well.

Do people still go out with 3 and 5 woods or just the 3 and a recovery? I've heard that it's popular to have a high wedge in addition to the 5-SW set? |
