This gave me an excellent chance to make my first birdie of the year, however I somehow managed to three putt!
It did exactly that and the ball executed a beautiful curve to come back down onto the fairway and roll onto the green. Like yours it stopped about a yard from the hole. And I three putted it. Okay so at least I got par but that was annoying. Should have been an eagle

Gah, I know how that goes. Last year I hit a gorgeous shot off the tee on the downhill 18th (par 4) at Feldon Valley. it was a breezy day and I sent the ball toward the clubhouse hoping the wind would push it back left toward the green.

A bit annoying as I went round in 107 back in July, but the way my short game is at the moment that's no surprise. On the positive side I didn't lose a ball until the 15 hole and my driving was decent. |

Ah, well - it's not quite as impressive as it sounds. From the excellent course guide. I do wish other courses would have guides like that. Very helpful and of course shows off the beauty of this particular course.
"18th Hole - Par 4 245yards The 18th hole is a classic risk and reward hole. The short par four, or par three from the ladies tee, plays from an elevated tee, making the green and hole seem shorter and within easy reach. If you are a longer hitter and the temptation is too great, beware of the pond short left of the green and the out of bounds right. The safer route is to play an iron or fairway wood short of the pond, a delicate pitch across the water can then set up a final whole birdie putt in front of the clubhouse." My typical carry is 160 yds and for this hole that lands me just before the slightly steeper part of the fairway. Pretty much where you can see the fairway bending around the trees to the left. Forty yards of roll on dry ground will get me close to the green and the slope add about twenty yards. So if I hit a good drive the green is within range. One other time my ball rolled down onto the gree, missed the hole by a foot and rolled two more yards past it. But this shot my ball sailed over the shorter of those trees and I imagine the breeze gave it the extra yards it needed to get onto the green. The clubhouse is just to the left of that picture. |

Because they moved the tees back a lot yesterday it meant that most of the par 3s were around 200 yards. That always gives me a bit of an issue as I know I can't hit that range with my 4/5 recovery woods but my 3 wood tends to go further than that if I flush it. Actually my driver is usually shorter than my 3 wood as the ball goes higher. So on a lot of them I was getting out the driver but simply not having the accuracy to hold. Really I suppose I should lay up and pitch on but you don't really want to do that on a par 3 and my pitching has been very ropey.j |

Nemesis course? I don't think so.
Problem with bright winter days? I don't think so. Damn' good score playing off the whites. Yes, I think so. What an amazing day. Most of the greens were rock hard (pitching onto them was a bad idea) and some had frost on them. But my game was good

But I did notice again today that my irons are a bit ropey. I think the grip changes to my driver are still affecting my approach accuracy. Luckily today it didn't matter. Pitching onto a green was a bad idea. If you tried it there would be a distinct 'tink' and the ball would bounce off over the back

tbh i am not really that big on memorabilia, altho i do wish i had taken better care of that ball
that was a really great day tho, just seeing them up close and getting the chance to chat to trevino, he was having fun with his caddie at one hole. he got to his tee-shot and turned to his caddie and asked what club it was, the caddie checked his yardage book and said a 4 iron. trevino asked for his 1 iron and knocked it onto the middle of the green, he then dropped another ball and asked for a 7 iron, again knocking it on to the middle of the green. dropped another ball and said "ok give me the 4 iron" which he again hit onto the green, turned to his caddie and said "yep you were right" and then gave us a wink and started laughing. That reminds me of something I seen at a practice day before the Open several years ago. Camillo Villegas was around 150 out on the fairway, he hit a horrible block so dropped another ball which he pulled way left, dropped a 3rd ball which made the green but around 20 feet away. Vijay Singh walked over and dropped a ball where Villegas was playing from and promptly knocked it stone dead and strolled away without saying a word. ![]() I remember when I started playing golf I used to find an occasional Lee Trevino Supermex golf ball. Used to always find Seve Ballesteros branded balls as well but can't really remember any other's with player names on them. |

Not much posting on this thread recently. Have to admit that I haven't played this month - am planning to start up again in the new year.

I'm playing at 8.45 tomorrow.
Played last Thursday. Amazingly, my wife said "Are you playing Saturday morning (Christmas Eve), as I need to blitz the house?" I quickly responded "Probably" only to find no other bugger got a pass after I texted around. Wimps! |

I played the Sunday before Christmas and Tuesday this week. Got 95 again on the Sunday I think but 101 on Tuesday. A bit disappointing to be back in triple digits but I had a bad 9th (poor drive and got trapped in trees twice) I also lost one ball at a par three. I took a second shot and that led to me holing out nicely for par. Plus the penalty and wasted shot
![]() I could perhaps have got 99 but on the 18th I duffed a SW shot then got careless and two putted when one putt should have been enough. Still - it was lovely weather. Not decided when we're playing this weekend. Might go for Saturday. As Sun looks a bit wet. |

It came down on boxing day and hasn't left - the Reading match had to be postponed at half time because of it! |

Are your courses open on NY Day?
I'm playing at my club today with my usual partner. We haven't decided about Monday yet. It's due to be a cold start so it'd be at Rye and if they are running a comp it might be too busy. We won't want to be at my club as they'll be using temp greens and requiring winter wheels (which only I have) on Monday. |

93 off the whites. Pretty good I feel. Course was a little damp but otherwise good condition. Unfortunately my partner didn't fair so well. He kept hitting his longer clubs fat or topping them and he still hasn't adjusted his chips. He's normally pretty good at chipping on with the ball checking nicely. Unfortunately I think he's still playing summer distances so now he ends up well short.
Oddly my 'rolling chip' (ball forward, lean the shaft then keep wrists fixed through swing) is producing the same distances as it was during summer (10 yards for the SW then +10 yards for each club up from there). So my chip ons have continued to be pretty good. |

I went to a local course to play 9 today. Was expecting it to be bitter out there but the conditions were actually ok with the sun - took off my winter gloves after the second hole. Thankfully we could still use our trolleys, there were only a few winter tees and the greens were extremely good.
I hadn't swung a club in anger in about 4 weeks so I got there early and went to the range and was surprised how good it was going - pretty much everything down the middle with little effort. Maybe 15-20 yards shorter than what they should be but i've had that issue for a while. So I was confident going on the course . . . . only to hit my worst 9 round there - 66. It was just dreadful, apart from my recover woods I couldn't hit anything. Still trying to work out a way forward as my experience with lessons last year was pretty bad. I have a manual so I might dedicate myself to doing the routines instead and see if that helps. |
